Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
YeahWrite #319 Weekly Writing Challenge Kickoff
What's Your Excuse? Every time I have to correct my 10 year old, he has some kind of excuse. "I was just gonna..." "But, I was {doing this other thing}..." "That's not what I was doing..." "Sigh. Eye roll." (Okay, he doesn't actually say that.) He can't do the thing I...

Registration is Open for YeahWrite’s 5th Super Challenge
I love fiction. Left to my own devices I'll read and write it all day... unless someone's left an Ann Rule book sitting out where I can see it. See, it's not just that the true crime genre is fascinating in its sensationalist (and, okay, often problematic) way, it's...
Congratulations to the Round 2 winners at YeahWrite Super Challenge #4
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and Round Two of the Super Challenge took that literally, giving eighteen writers a chance to tell us a thousand words and include that gorgeous visual prompt. Once again, anything that went right is entirely due to our...
YeahWrite #318 Weekly Writing Challenge for Fiction | Poetry is open!
The Summary Of All Its Parts Many years ago, I worked at a university. Part of my job was to write and edit academic papers and reports. Anyone who’s ever written such a report knows that often the only part of it anyone actually reads is the executive summary. So,...
YeahWrite #318 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Personal Essays & Mostly True Stories
All Good Things... This is my last missive as YeahWrite’s nonfiction editor. Well, for now. We joke on the staff that YeahWrite is the “Hotel California” of online writing communities – you know, you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave. I’ve been...
YeahWrite #318 Weekly Writing Challenge Kickoff
I'm Throwing Down a Challenge Why do we write? I suppose there are many reasons, but I think all of them can get traced back to one simple idea: we want to be read. Whether it's that we hope to publish a book, or get our short story picked up in a journal, or have our...
