Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
Navigating Prompts: Characters – Images
Is it possible If you put that search string into Google, you'll get a lot of autocomplete options. One of the most fascinating ones is "Is it possible to write a story without characters?" The answers are sure, certain: No. Yes. One of our favorite answers is "yes,...
Summer Coworking!
A little help from your friends Join YeahWrite editors for virtual coworking hours throughout the summer! We'll open up a Zoom, make some introductions, talk about what we want to accomplish during the session, and spend an hour or so working quietly on our individual...
Registration is OPEN for Super Challenge #21!
Y'all, I know I'm supposed to write something chirpy and exciting, but the LOW temperature here last night was around 90 degrees (around 30 Celsius for folks living in countries with reasonable measurement standards) and frankly I think I've sweated all the words out...
Congratulations to the Winners of YeahWrite’s Super Challenge #20
On fire Not literally, as in living in Oregon during this 114F/45C heatwave, but figuratively, as in the fires of love, or "your story is on fire." We are feeling inappropriately smug about this prompt combo, which yielded one of our best crops of final-round stories...
YeahWrite #533 Weekly Writing Challenge
Dah Brees-way Our apartment is unique for Chicago because it is both large and comparably inexpensive. In the back of the line of rooms, like a caboose, there's a large, covered...well, in Michigan we'd call it a back deck but our landlord in his thick Chicago accent...
YeahWrite #532 Weekly Writing Challenge
Surf's up Every summer, my little family escapes the heat with near-daily trips to the beach. California is built to be lived in outside, but as the years grow hotter and hotter, staying in the water is the only palatable option available. My kids are finally old...
YeahWrite #531 Weekly Writing Challenge
Cold enough for ya? Every summer, random strangers ask if it's hot enough, and every winter, without fail, some passing person will pull their coat a little tighter closed around themselves and ask if it's cold enough. What do they expect in response? "Why no, Brenda....
The final round of Super Challenge #20 is underway!
Inventive Headline Goes Here It's the final round of the 20th Super Challenge and is your brain as tired of coming up with ideas as mine? Probably. The good news is, your story doesn't have to be the most innovative thing ever written. In fact, trying too hard to do...

Pride in action Happy June, YeahWriters! Pride is now in full swing, and we here at YeahWrite hope to forever foster a space where everyone can gather, be their true selves, and better their craft. We're so glad you're here. A new month also means a new prompt style...
Congratulations to the Round 1 winners at YeahWrite Super Challenge #20
A token of our affection As the token gamer of the team, I've been playing a lot of, well, stuff lately. Some to relax, some to catch up (first of all, the Hugos have a video game category this year; second of all, I have a lot of Zelda to replay before all the...
