The jury prize is back!

Bloggers came out in force this week and nobody was more excited than your yeah write editors. We’ve been itching to award a jury prize for weeks now. Welcome also to the whopping fifteen virgins on the grid! Thanks to everyone for submitting your best stuff, waiting patiently through moderation, reading in community, and voting fairly for your top four picks. Let’s do it all again next week, shall we?

Editor picks and invitational grid

Our challenge grid tipped over the magic 30 post requirement to unlock the invitational grid this week and the editors selected six posts to compete for the yeah write jury prize. Congrats to Meghan, Alisa, Bill, Samantha, Genna, and Snails Tell Tales. You get bling! Go grab your editors’ pick badge to display on your blog.

Jury prize winner
“Tough – abridged” by Snails Tell Tales

As writers, especially of the flash nonfiction we feature here at yeah write, we are constantly asking ourselves, “Where do I begin?” There are lots of possible entry points into a story about the death of one’s favorite aunt. With unique framing, our jury prize winner, “Tough – abridged” by Snails Tell Tales, turns a single scene – a wake for her great-aunt — into a container for a lifetime of memories. She begins and ends with laundry, a mundane task to keep grieving fingers busy whilst not-so-helpful mourners linger in the living room. A simple pajama top, sized for an aging woman’s shrinking frame, brings forth a torrent of memories. In just two paragraphs that are filled – but not overstuffed – with dialogue, details, and anecdotes, the author paints out a life of a sassy snuff-dipper who knew the names of all the kinds of cows.

Congratulations, Snails Tell Tails, on your first jury prize win! Go grab your badge in the sidebar.

Crowd favorite

“Memoir of a Gay Date” by Bill Dameron at The Authentic Life

If you’ve ever thought, “No way can I draw a complete character in under 600 words!” then you need to closely analyze this week’s crowd favorite, “Memoir of a Gay Date,” by Bill Dameron. In the first two lines, Bill’s already got Kyle plucking and cooing and batting his eyes, and with every line of dialogue he further fleshes out his personality. Congrats, Bill! Go grab your crowd fave badge in the sidebar.

After many weeks of a truncated top row, we’ve got a top row four! Congratulations to Cynthia, Snails Tell Tails, and yours truly (thanks!) for rounding it out. We have top row badges for each of you. Grab one if you earned one.

Who does Comment Bob love this week? Jen Brunett!

Last, but certainly not least, we have a Comment Bob to award! Who showed the most yeah write community spirit this week? Who commented thoughtfully on each post on the grid, and cheered on her fellow gridfolk? Congratulations to Jen Brunett at Living Dreams! Comment Bob #154 is all yours, over there in the sidebar. Thank you so much for your team spirit.

Weekend moonshine grid opens today at 6 p.m. eastern time!

It’s the weekend, and yeah write guest editor Natalie D is setting up her moonshine grid and bathtub gin just for you. Show us the other side of your blog – those posts that might not meet our submission guidelines for the weekly challenge grid but are awesome nonetheless. Link up or just visit, read, and comment. We’re serving drinks, hard and soft. Catch up with Natalie starting at 6 p.m. eastern time today. Closing time is midnight on Monday. You don’t need to go home, but you can’t stay there.

Win-win

The thumbnails are now sorted in the grid from most votes to the least. In the case of a tie, the thumbnails are additionally sorted by page views.

Do not be discouraged if your blog has landed near the bottom of the grid; especially if it was a tight race. The fun lies in getting better exposure for your blog and, in the spirit of competition, an incentive to improve your writing and blogging skills. It’s a win-win for everybody involved.

Thanks again, everybody, for submitting, for reading, for accepting the weekly writing challenge. And for making yeah write the most welcoming spot on the Interwebs for writers who blog and bloggers who write.

Pay it forward…

Before you leave, remember to congratulate our winners, editors’ picks, and the top row. And let the writers you voted for know that their post moved you, inspired you, or made you laugh on a rough day.

Join us next week for yeah write #155. Tell us a story in about 600 words. We love those.
