A stitch in time

Sometimes it feels like we’re piecing our lives together. Work, family, friends; doctors’ appointments, soccer games, movie nights. Trying to figure out how it all goes together – it’s one big crazy quilt. Sometimes there’s a piece that just doesn’t fit, and you’ve got to toss it aside. Sometimes you’ve got to trim down a piece that’s already there. And sometimes a new pile of scraps just falls into your lap and you can sew away, humming all the while.

I think of writing as a thread that can stitch together all the disparate pieces of our lives. And even more: it helps us connect what we experience with what we want to share about that experience. The trick for me is remembering that even thread takes up space – in other words, you’ve got to make allowances for the time writing takes away from those experiences. It’s not an easy thing. I’ve pricked my finger more than once trying to force the needle through too many layers. Still, it’s not a project unless you bleed on it a little, right? It doesn’t stop me from stitching.

Congrats!

By the way, did you see that our very own Rowan G’s latest essay was featured on the Five Star Roundup? We’re pretty proud of her. Go check out the post, and do pay attention to Elan Morgan‘s blog – you’ll never be disappointed by what you find on her site. Congrats, Rowan![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

March poetry slam: cinquains

Feeling like trying something new? How about joining us at the yeah write poetry slam? This month we’re focusing on cinquains. Rowan has thrown down the gauntlet and challenged the yeah write staff to post their attempts this week. We’d love to see you there too.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

This week’s ultimate question: Whose side are you on?

Answer this question in exactly 42 words for the gargleblaster micro challenge, or use it to inspire your submission to the other competitive grids.

Tips for your microstories

This week’s question requires two things for a good answer: two positions, embodied by characters, and a choice. Notice we’re looking for a who here, not a what. Are you rooting for the Yankees or the Red Sox? Are you siding with the wife in your friends’ divorce? Please note that the verb tense of the answer should match the verb tense of the question. We want a current situation, not one in the past or future.

And please, if you love me, don’t write about that dress.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

Winners’ round-up

In case you missed them, you can find last week’s yeah write staff picks and crowd favorites all laid out for you on Friday’s winners’ post. Leave the winners some love in the comments. They will love you right back, we guarantee it.

The weekend’s not over: the moonshine grid is still open. Have something to add? Old posts and new are welcome. No moderation, no voting. It’s a laid-back relaxed kind of place. Drop by, share your work, and while you’re there, visit your fellow yeah writers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

How yeah write works

We’ve got three competitive challenge grids — nonfiction, fiction|poetry and microstories. They are all moderated. Submissions which do not meet our editorial guidelines will not be passed through to the voting grid.

You can learn more about yeah write in our FAQ.

More than just a weekly writing challenge

Sure, the competitive grids are our bread and butter, but there’s more on the menu. We’re building a community of writers who are continually striving to get better at their craft. The challenge grids are one way to do this. We’ve also got the moonshine weekend writing showcase, which is a great place to let loose and try something new, plus the yeah write coffeehouse — the hippest place on the ‘net to find a writing partner, talk about writing or just hang out with other yeah writers. Head barista Nate serves up a couple shots of espresso every week, specially formulated to get your creative juices flowing. Grab a chair and start chatting up your neighbors!
