Where there’s smoke…

My house has a fireplace. Sure, it’s boarded over and stuffed full of rags, but it’s there. My wife and I like to make up stories about what’s really hidden inside. A body? Gold coins? A nest full of baby mice? We have no idea. We also like to reminisce about the last place we lived that had a working fireplace. We used it twice, filled the apartment with smoke both times, and had to clean up a mess of ashes. Truth be told, our current fireplace is probably more fun.

Winter weather getting you down? Warm up with this week’s ultimate question. Give us something heartwarming, smoldering, or scorching hot. Whatever you do, don’t leave us cold: this week we return to moderated submissions.

The moonshine weekend writing showcase is still open for those essays and stories that didn’t find a home on last week’s grids. You can also stop by the yeah write coffeehouse for a couple shots of espresso and some great company. Hint: we’re gearing up for another poetry slam, so make sure to poke your head in to see this month’s assignment.

Public service announcement: voting schedule change

With the return to moderated grids, we are adjusting the voting schedule a tiny bit. Starting this week voting on all three grids will open on Wednesdays at 11:00 PM Eastern time (-5 GMT) and close on Thursdays at 10:00 PM, giving you 23 hours to vote. All grids will close at 10:00 PM on Wednesdays as usual. This change is to ensure that the editorial staff will have time to review all submissions before voting opens.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

This week’s ultimate question: what’s burning?

Answer this question in exactly 42 words for the gargleblaster micro challenge, or use it to inspire your submission to the other competitive grids.

Tips for your microstories

This week’s question requires only two things for a good answer: a fire, real or metaphorical, and the thing that’s burning. As usual, note the tense of the question. We’re not asking what burned yesterday, will burn next week, or would burn if you poured enough lighter fuel on it.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

Winners’ round-up

In case you missed them, you can find the yeah write #194 staff picks and crowd favorites all laid out for you on Friday’s winners’ post. Leave the winners some love in the comments. They will love you right back, we guarantee it.

The weekend’s not over: the moonshine grid is still open. Have something to add? Old posts and new are welcome. No moderation, no voting. It’s a laid-back relaxed kind of place. Drop by, share your work, and while you’re there, visit your fellow yeah writers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

How yeah write works

We’ve got three competitive challenge grids — nonfiction, fiction|poetry and microstories. They are all moderated. Submissions which do not meet our editorial guidelines will not be passed through to the voting grid.

You’ll find the schedule, submissions guidelines, etc. in our FAQ.
