Lifelong connections or temporary couplings?

Is there a reason for everyone who comes into our life to be there? Is it to teach us a lesson such as trusting our instincts? Maybe it’s to give us directions to the nearest corner store when Google Maps led us to a condemned building instead.

Whatever the reason, for however long, our job as writers is to document the encounter the best we can. Depending on how that person treated us, depending on the lesson learned, the story we write about them can be one of coming of age or a dark cautionary tale. Once it’s on the page, it’s our story to do as we wish, shape as we feel. We don’t even have to get the details exactly right. The narrative becomes our only guide, freeing us from all other obligation.

Don’t forget we’re going to Long Beach Comic Con September 12-13. Are you making the trip? Come find us at our booth and be sure to sit in on our panel, The Future of Digital Storytelling.

If you’re up for a detour, I recommend you stop by The Only Living Boy. You may even want to stay a while. Author David Gallaher and illustrator Steve Ellis have created a magical world for you to explore in this gorgeous comic. We’ll be interviewing David the week after Long Beach Comic Con, and Steve is graciously providing the prizes for our on-site microstory contest.

Moderation returns September 20

You heard me. We’ve had a nice long vacation, but it’s time to go back to school. Sharpen up those No. 2’s and get ready to bring us your absolute best. You may want to brush up on oursubmission guidelines before the bell rings.

Meet our members

Yeah write is a 100% volunteer run organization, and we couldn’t do what we do without the support of some amazing members. Why don’t you swing by and see who they are? While you’re there, give them a big thank you, or maybe a hug. And if you’re so inclined, consider becoming a member yourself.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Is there anybody out there?

This optional prompt, which also serves as the ultimate question for our microstory challenge opening Wednesday, is here to serve as your inspiration for your nonfiction submission. Already have your own story thought up? No problem! The prompt is only there if you need it.
