Welcome to the fiction and poetry challenge at yeah write

Sometimes when writing we become too comfortable. We rely on our usual tricks to tell a story that neatly wraps up in less than 600 words and leaves no question unanswered. But what if you were to leave a few ends undone? What if your character didn’t look like every other character you’ve ever sketched? W. Somerset Maugham is credited with saying, “There are three rules for the writing of a novel. Unfortunately no one knows what they are,” and the same could be said about flash fiction. Throw your rule book out the window and come up with something out of the ordinary.

Optional prompt: whose side are you on?

This optional prompt is to serve as your inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question, word for word, in your story or poem, or just answer the question. Pick a side and stick with it! Already have your own story thought up? No problem! The prompt is only there if you need it.

March poetry slam: cinquains

Feeling like trying something new? How about joining us at the yeah write poetry slam? This month we’re focusing on cinquains. Rowan has thrown down the gauntlet and challenged the yeah write staff to post their attempts this week. We’d love to see you there too.

Yeah write observes Daylight Saving Time

Please take note that this week we at yeah write have sprung forward. If you’re in a time zone that doesn’t participate in this clock-changing nonsense, please grab your phone and find out what the time difference is so you don’t miss a grid opening or voting closure. Here’s what Google tells me: Eastern Daylight Time is UTC/GMT -4 hours.

Is this your first time here? Check out Sunday’s post which kicked off the week here at yeah write. If you don’t think you can remember to check back every Sunday, you can sign up for our email blasts directly to your inbox.

Have questions you can’t find the answer to by poking around the site? Email us or find us on Facebook and Twitter and we’ll happily help you out.
