A dark side

Writers are often said to have dark sides that can spell their dooms. The tormented writer is no new archetype–in fact, many a famous writer has confessed to an addiction or two throughout his or her career, and a few have even come to tragic ends. However, we’re often attracted to something that makes a good story, which is why we fail to notice all the writers without a dark side who do just fine. A dark side is not required to be a writer.

That said, every human has shades of gray upon which they can draw when the need arises. As we approach the end of October and the spirits draw closer to the earth, why not play with yours by dabbling in this month’s focus on fiction genre, noir? Or take it a step further and give the horror or thriller world a try?

Before submitting your shadowy creation, make sure to check out the submission guidelines. A refresher course–or a peek at our guidelines if you’re new–will help you to click that submit button with confidence.

Meet our members

Yeah write is a 100% volunteer run organization, and we couldn’t do what we do without the support of some amazing members. Why don’t you swing by and see who they are? While you’re there, give them a big thank you, or maybe a hug. And if you’re so inclined, consider becoming a member yourself.

Where can I get one of those?

The optional prompt above can serve as inspiration for your fiction or poetry. Use the question word for word in your story or poem, or just answer it. Physical items are not the only possible answer to this question–a person can ask for something more abstract, too…like, say, a conscience. Already have a different story thought up? No problem! Use the prompt only if you need it.

More inspiration

Need a bit more? For this month’s focus on fiction, we are brooding at our desks smoking a Noir brand cigarette. In the poetry corner, we’re conjuring up riddles.

Still drawing a blank? You can also find writing exercises in the coffeehouse to get things started. You’ll notice we moved it to a Facebook group: much easier access and interaction!
