What do you want?

We’re a different kind of writing site. We’re not a link-up. We’re not a blog hop. We’re a place where writers can come, interact, learn, and improve their craft. You are here because that’s what you want, right?

Lisa of Pryvate Parts left this great comment in the coffeehouse:

Being on the grid with YW writers has made me a better writer, both by reading their winning posts week after week and by my own drive to improve and win. YW is a microcosm of the “real world.” A safe one. In the “real world,” I will (someday) submit dozens of stories that won’t get published in favor of other writers. It’s inevitable. That rejection will be hard, real hard. I like to think I’m practicing not only how to write, but how to pick myself up when I don’t fare as well as my fragile heart wants me to.

Here at yeah write, we don’t accept every submission that comes through the doors. As hard as it is to send and receive love letters, we hope that our writers learn something from them, if not in terms of craft–though we hope for that, too–then at least in terms of process. You want to submit to a litmag? To HuffPost? To a writing contest? This is a good place to practice that process. You want honest feedback? We’re happy to oblige. You want more people to flock to your blog? We can help with that too, but we are not a reader mill. If you want empty attaboys and faint praise, this isn’t the place to get it. Think about what you want, yeah writers, and don’t be afraid to go out and get it.

Who’s on fourth?

Tune in on Monday for this month’s interview with Nancy of Chef’s Last Diet![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

The basics

Yeah write gives you three weekly writing challenge grids — nonfiction, fiction|poetry and microstories — all of which are moderated. Check them out below. Submissions that meet our guidelines will be moved to the voting grid; those that do not will get a personal love letter from our submissions editor explaining why. Got a question? E-mail us, tweet us, ping us on Facebook, or visit our online community, the yeah write coffeehouse. You can learn more about yeah write in our FAQ.

The rules

Please make sure you are familiar with our submission guidelines before you enter. We don’t have a lot of rules, but we do enforce them across the board. We’d hate to see anyone get disqualified by a technicality.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Bring us your personal essays and creative nonfiction!

The nonfiction challenge grid opens on Monday at midnight EDT. This is the best place on the ‘net to showcase your best writing. Make us laugh, make us cry, make us think, and above all: make us care.

Nonfiction theme of the month: irony

This month’s completely optional theme is irony, and your assignment – should you choose to accept it – is to take at a photograph and tell us what’s really going on. For more on irony, check out Rowan’s article in our writing help section.

Is fiction more your thing?

The fiction|poetry grid opens on Tuesday. Grab a mic and join our monthly poetry slam, or check out our new focus on fiction! The coffeehouse is the place to go to keep up on these special events.

Focus on fiction

This month we’re taking a look at noir. Grab your best fedora and give it a try.

Poetry slam

When is a raven like a writing desk? Instead of tackling a specific poetry form, we’re challenging you to write us a riddle.

This week’s ultimate question: where can I get one of those?

Answer this question in exactly 42 words for the microstory challenge, or use it to inspire your submission to the other competitive grids. The microstory challenge opens on Wednesday.

Tips for your microstories

A good answer to this week’s question will include the thing you want to get and the place you can get your hands on one. Did your boss admire your necktie? Did you recently acquire a new hoverboard? (If you did, let me know–I’m dying to have one myself.)

Remember: do not include the question in your title or your answer. Do not include extra words – no footnotes, no explanations, no shout-outs. Do not rely on your word processor or blog to give you an accurate word count. COUNT YOUR WORDS WITH YOUR EYES. Posts that do not meet these standards will not be moved to the voting grid.

Questions? Want to talk it through? Grab a latte at the coffeehouse and chat with your fellow yeah writers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Winners’ round-up

In case you missed them, you can find last week’s yeah write staff picks and crowd favorites all laid out for you on Friday’s winners’ post. Leave the winners some love in the comments. They will love you right back, we guarantee it.

Weekend writing showcase

The weekend’s not over: the moonshine grid is still open. Have something to add? Old posts and new are welcome. No moderation, no voting. It’s a laid-back relaxed kind of place. Just leave your commercial or sponsored posts at home. Drop by, share your work, and while you’re there, visit your fellow yeah writers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
