Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
YeahWrite #390 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Popular Voting
Read and Be Read This is Michelle, filling in for Stacie who is off this week and most likely drinking wine right now. One of the earliest slogans at YeahWrite was "Read and Be Read." It sounds perfect, right? We love to read great work, but we also want eyes on our...
YeahWrite #390 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Microprose
Boo! It's October - time to turn our minds to the spooky and scary, the inexplicable and the inevitable. When I first started putting together this micro prompt, I was a little intimidated. Scared, you might say. I haven't heard a ghost story in years, and I didn't...
Joy Writing
I don't know about you, but I get bored no matter what I'm doing, if I do it long enough. Even if it's writing. My favorite characters start staggering drunkly across the page, my intricate plots begin to dissolve, and my settings go cardboard-flat. But I...
Casting Call
Raise your hand if you had fun with last month's poetry slam, the Golden Shovel. For me, part of the fun was going through other people's poetry, looking for those perfect lines that spoke to me, and then figuring out how I could speak through them. When...
Welcome to YeahWrite’s Weekly Writing Challenge #390
Writing as Respite When things are difficult, write. For many, it's a rough time right now. Write, my friends, and let it heal you. Whether it be something extremely personal that you never show a soul, a response to what you see around you, a scathing...
Super Challenge #10 Round One is Underway!
Welcome to the Super Challenge! If it's your first time here at this competition designed by writers and for writers (seriously we'd like to quit our jobs and enter, do you want to run this thing for a while) welcome. We hope you'll have as much fun writing to the...
YeahWrite #389 Weekend Writing Showcase
The Weekend Writing Showcase is open! TGIF, YeahWriters! Let’s make this place your home for all the stories that didn’t make it to the YeahWrite competitive grids this week. As a refresher, here’s what we had going on! Technique Toolbox: Pseudonyms Every writer wants...
YeahWrite #389 Weekly Writing Challenge: Popular Vote Winners and Editors’ Picks
Dystopian Fiction I dunno, y'all, do you still read dystopia? It's starting to lose its charm when I can just open up the Washington Post. In other news, a giant meteor missed us, so those of you on Team Giant Meteor 2020 need to work harder if this is all you can get...
YeahWrite #389 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Popular Voting
Something Old? Something New? After having written the voting post weekly for quite some time, I fear that one day I might revisit a story I've already told. It's not out of the question. My brain is aging, after all. So if I ever do that, you have a few options. You...
Welcome to YeahWrite’s Weekly Writing Challenge #389
Where Have I Heard This Before? There's a very fine line between relatable and trite. In fact, it's so fine I think it's actually blurred more often than not. If you've heard one toddler tantrum tale, you've heard them all, right? On many occasions of...
