Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
YeahWrite #628 Weekly Writing Challenge
I'm so excited Honestly, it's been such a rush hosting Scarlet Quill meetings and this month was no exception. If you haven't been checking out our supplemental content, you're missing out on a lot. This month our guests discussed the ways that some tropes reverberate...
YeahWrite #627 Weekly Writing Challenge
Tossing stones - or spaghetti Sometimes writing feels like tossing stones into a still pond just to watch the ripples. What effect will this phrase, this line of dialog, this scene have on the rest of the story? And sometimes it feels like tossing spaghetti at the...
YeahWrite #626 Weekly Writing Challenge
Love, actually Confession time. I unashamedly love romcoms (yes, even the dodgey ones like the one in the header). I know, I know, I know. They're too often cheesy and trite, and sometimes they're downright problematic, but they're my guilty pleasure, my vice. They're...
The Scarlet Quill Society: Abandon Trope
Welcome (back) to the Scarlet Quill Society! In 2023 YeahWrite's free workshop is going back to the basics with a focus on tropes, the sometimes imperceptible and often underrated building blocks of writing. Check out the bottom of this post (and every post) for a...
Congratulations to the Winners of YeahWrite’s Super Challenge #27
Dear diary (don't) The trick to writing good memoir - and personal essays are a form of memoir - is making sure you don't tell the reader more about yourself than you intended. What you thought was a funny story might end up being, well, unintentionally revealing. And...
YeahWrite #625 Weekly Writing Challenge
Living at Work No matter what our hobby or passion is, we all find ourselves disconnected from that part of ourselves due to what life throws at us from time to time. For me, working from home has really turned me away from writing. Now while you couldn't pry my new...
YeahWrite #624 Weekly Writing Challenge
In like a lion and out like another whole lion with a chip on its shoulder, apparently March! It's Spring (or Fall) officially! The days are longer (or shorter) than the nights already! (This is, by the way, some !@#$#@$@#@, especially with DST already here.) But...
YeahWrite #623 Weekly Writing Challenge
Saving the day As a parent, I often feel like I'm not quite living up to the standards society has set for parenting. Do I pack a healthy three-course lunch for my kid every day? No. Do I shuttle my kids to seventeen different activities every week? Nope; just one...
The final round of Super Challenge #27 is underway!
Time, time, time SPECIAL NOTE: This weekend, the US marks the beginning of Daylight Saving Time, which means we lose an hour. Because we don't want to penalize our writers, we will close submissions at 11:00 pm US Eastern Time on Sunday, March 12 (instead of 10:00...
YeahWrite #622 Weekly Writing Challenge
Nothing. Nowhere. Once In a While. That whole “write what you know” trope we were taught in school is some bullshit. If everyone had followed that advice, we’d never have sci-fi or most, hopefully, horror novels. We’d never have Everything, Everywhere, All At Once....
