Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

Howling Disappointment I missed the super blood wolf moon because of a storm system, so I feel deprived. I hope some of you got to see it. [ed's note: the clouds broke here for JUST LONG ENOUGH 😛 /rbg] The pictures look amazing. I've seen lunar eclipses and super...

My Brain on Brevity Last year, I hardly wrote at all. I read a lot--more than sixty books--but I can count the number of stories I wrote on one hand (okay, it was six, but you get what I mean). Since I've already written three stories in 2019, I'm tracking far better....

Practice makes... ...perfect, right? Isn't that how the saying goes? But it turns out that's not quite true, is it? See, recent studies have shown that mindful practice improves your work a lot faster than just repetitive practice. What's true for music is true for...

Hanging on to the Holidays I still haven't taken down my Christmas decorations. In my defense, I was gone all last week and this week has been full of paperwork, writing (!!), and restocking the refrigerator (not necessarily in that order). I'll get to it, eventually....

Whatever gets you through Hey, did you know they make energy drinks that are also coffee but they're still energy drinks? I've got a dozen or so backed up emails I can't even bring myself to look at, the fancy blueblocker "stop getting migraines from your screen"...

I Found My Heart I tagged along on my husband's business trip to San Francisco, and since he is in meetings all day, I spend the day walking for hours and eating old favorites like clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl and dungeness crab cocktail. YUM! It's so nice...

New Year, New You? Anyone else sick of that phrase yet? How about "New Year, New Slogan?" In any event, happy 2019! This is a perfect opportunity to set some goals for your writing and then get to work crushing them! Be sure to set small and measurable goals along the...

In-Jokes In-jokes are one of my favorite things about following a writer. For example, I love it when Stephen King's characters make cameos in other books. For example, near the end of Tommyknockers, a not-particularly-famous book about finding a spaceship, one...

Easing into 2019 I hope everyone had a great New Year's Eve doing whatever made you happy. I had to go to a party at the last minute (I'm an extrovert but not a late-night person so parties are never my choice for NYE) but luckily it was not a crowd we are entrenched...

Looking back Hey, you. Yeah, you. Look how much you accomplished last year. Chances are, you've written a few words. Maybe you've even written a lot of words. Celebrate that! Even if you didn't hit your goals (I know I didn't), remember that every bit of story, every...
