Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
YeahWrite #418 Weekly Writing Challenge: Popular Vote Winners
Hoodies While Stacie was looking at hooded skunks, I was looking at Mount Hood. With editors in both hemispheres and all over two continents (although I'm holding out for my move to Antarctica, go away spring) sometimes it's hard to touch base at a time that works for...

Pee-Yew I saw a hooded skunk in my yard today, which was a big surprise considering they are local to the southwestern US and no where near New England. I've been wondering all day how it made its way to far-away Massachusetts. The iNaturalist app only has one report...

Prey Drive I spied my first coyote of the spring in the woods today, or rather my dog Tango did, which means more are on the way. They tend to be very active as the new pups arrive, so it's time to be a bit more vigilant and maybe let the daydreaming fall by the...

A little peace and quiet The dog had surgery Monday and has spent most of the week doped up on her bottomless prescription of narcotics (I legitimately don't understand the difference between the anodyne principles for pets and those for cancer patients, but that's...

Clothes Pile I need to get my act together and clean out my closet. Now (for the past 8 years) that I spend most of my time in sweatpants or yoga pants, I have way too many clothes. I put real clothes on only about twice per week, and by real clothes, I mean jeans or...

Welp, I am a Libra. Balance. It's always in the back of my head when we choose the month's fiction|poetry writing prompt themes. Are we trying to push you all out of your comfort zones with the prompts? Or are we just trying to give you building blocks so that you'll...
YeahWrite #416 Weekly Writing Challenge: Popular Vote Winners and Editors’ Picks
You may say I'm a dreamer... It's Friday, and once again I didn't get enough sleep during the week. But it's for a good reason: I spent some of those extra hours chasing a real-life dream of mine. If you dream of being a writer, that dream may seem so far off. But if...

For Shame My dog Buster split his toenail last Sunday and has been wearing the "cone of shame" and on antibiotics for the past week. I finally de-coned him today, and he's much happier, obviously. I'm happier too, since it's pretty sad to see him banging around in...

The sublimity of language Words are beautiful things, don't you think? And language is an incredible tool, capable of describing the ineffable and translating one person's experience into something more universal by putting the right words in the right place at the...
Welcome to National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month, and you know what that means! Actually, no, you don't, because honestly we are not well-organized adults all the time and for at least the past few years we've dropped the ball on doing something cool for National Poetry Month. Well not...
