Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
The Scarlet Quill Society: Left on Read
Welcome (back) to the Scarlet Quill Society! In 2023 YeahWrite's free workshop is going back to the basics with a focus on tropes, the sometimes imperceptible and often underrated building blocks of writing. Check out the bottom of this post (and every post) for a...
YeahWrite #634 Weekly Writing Challenge
Theme and variations I had the pleasure a couple weeks ago of hanging out with another parent while our kids were busy at a school activity together, and we got to talking about writing. First, let me confess that it's taken me a long time to feel comfortable...
Congratulations to the Round 1 winners at YeahWrite Super Challenge #28
Think positive! By now, all of our writers have been gnashing their teeth over their feedback for a few hours. It's easy to focus on the negatives, but remember: the judges are specifically asked to point out what they see as the strong points as well as the weak...
YeahWrite #633 Weekly Writing Challenge
Words and words and words I've been reading (and writing) a lot of poetry recently. I love poetry. I love reading it and I love writing it. I also love cannibalising poetry techniques to use in my fiction and my creative nonfiction. You've probably heard the advice...
YeahWrite #632 Weekly Writing Challenge
Just Another... Frantic Friday As I write this, I'm staring down the barrel of another long weekend sitting at my desk, rather than enjoying the much needed cooler weather flowing into Seattle. It's my third straight weekend of work, and I am tired, y'all. I'm...
YeahWrite #631 Weekly Writing Challenge
Do not want Well, it's not even mid-May and we've got our first "dangerous heat" warning. My garden, which I just! planted! last! week! is in mortal peril. The county is prepping the cooling centers for people living on the streets or without AC in their houses. Other...
Super Challenge #28 Round 1 is Underway!
Let's do this! Are you ready for 48 hours of frantically writing and then just as frantically second-guessing your idea? Before you go grab your prompt and start doing that, we'd like a word. Specifically, we need to talk to you about AI. Against the backdrop of the...
YeahWrite #630 Weekly Writing Challenge
The nick of time? Phew, what a few weeks I've had! Between birthdays and broken wrists (not mine) it's been go Go GO around here. Which, of course, means I haven't had much time for substantial writing. What I have had time for is poetry. It doesn't hurt that April...
The Scarlet Quill Society: Got a problem with that?
Welcome (back) to the Scarlet Quill Society! In 2023 YeahWrite's free workshop is going back to the basics with a focus on tropes, the sometimes imperceptible and often underrated building blocks of writing. Check out the bottom of this post (and every post) for a...
YeahWrite #629 Weekly Writing Challenge
Procrastination Station I've been a procrastinator for as long as I can remember. I excuse it by saying I work better under a tight deadline, and whether that's true or not, I'm sticking with it. Perhaps that is why I've always found writing contests to be my bread...
