Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

What goes around, comes around There's nothing like a fast deadline to really get a writer's adrenaline pumping. But why should the fiction writers have all the fun? YeahWrite started eight years ago with creative nonfiction, and we're still committed to the genre. So...
YeahWrite #425 Weekly Writing Challenge: Popular Vote Winners and Editors’ Picks
That was easy. You might or might not have seen that commercial. The office supplies one? The one where at the end a character hits a big red button and a voice booms THAT WAS EASY. That's how I feel about some conversations we've been having lately in our little...

All together now I went to my second grader's school play today. It wasn't much in terms of length—only five minutes—but it told the story of an old man who grew an enormous turnip, a turnip so big that he couldn't pull it out on his own. So the old man called the old...

Welcome to the jungle I may live in the city now, but I grew up steps away from the woods. Our backyard was full of all sorts of charismatic critters—and a bunch of less charismatic ones, too. (Don't ask about the night I mistook a skunk for our black cat...) From...
An archipelago of poems
Happy Independence Day! Here in the U.S.A. we're not supposed to be celebrating until July, but someone on my block broke out the fireworks last weekend and got me thinking about parties. So this month, June, we're going to celebrate Independence Day early right on...
Welcome to YeahWrite’s Weekly Writing Challenge #425
The Answer is Iowa For at least a decade now, I've been trying to figure out who one of my 2nd great-grandfather's parents are. Long story short: No one in my family could ever find a paper trail on where he came from. So I've been digging and collaborating and...
Year of Fearless Writing: Networking On- and Offline
Welcome to the Year of Fearless Writing! You write. I mean, that's why you're here. But how often do you say "I'm a writer?" And what's the difference between "I write" and "I'm a writer" anyway? Over the last five years, YeahWrite--besides being a great place to...
Congratulations to the Winners of YeahWrite’s Super Challenge #12
It's all over now... The judges' results are in and tallied and we're ready to announce the winners of our twelfth Super Challenge! Fun fact: in my hometown there was a street sign that read "twelveth street" so thanks for using spellcheck and not making 5th graders...
YeahWrite #424 Weekly Writing Challenge: Popular Vote Winners and Editors’ Picks
Not ready yet This picture is my protest against the summer that is happening to me against my will. I refuse. Don't wanna. I've had the AC on for a week and it's not even June (although at least we're past Memorial Day). Just let me hang onto my rain for a minute or...

Stormy weather All over the US we've been having some pretty wild weather: tornadoes, thunderstorms, excessive heat—and it's only June. I know it's a sign of the times (climate change, anyone?) and I should anticipate it by now, but I just can't get used to the sky's...
