Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
YeahWrite #433 Weekly Writing Challenge: Popular Vote Winners
Day Three It's my third day alone in the house and I've gone the genteel kind of feral that has me subsisting on liver-pate-and-egg burritos and rum raisin ice cream bars. Protip: microwave the takoyaki before toasting (don't @ me, I don't have a kitchen right now and...
A sevenling for the eighth month
After July's longish form, we thought it might be time to take a break in August with a short poetry form called the sevenling. But you're not off the hook: everything you know about metaphor, connection, and structure is still important. And like July's poetry slam,...
Year of Fearless Writing – Pitch Perfect
Welcome to the Year of Fearless Writing! You write. I mean, that's why you're here. But how often do you say "I'm a writer?" And what's the difference between "I write" and "I'm a writer" anyway? Over the last five years, YeahWrite--besides being a great place to...

Whale of a Time Earlier this week, I took my son and nephew on a whale watching trip! Last time I went, I saw three different types of whales, plus dolphins. The time before, I saw four types of whales, plus dolphins. This time, we saw only two species: humpbacks and...

Polishing Up It's that time of year again. Vacation time! For the past 11 years, I've spent the last week of July with my college friends and our families at a resort in northern Michigan. This year, we're expecting over 35 people! We make community dinners, play...
Super Challenge #13 Round One is Underway!
There's a phrase often used in talking about journalism and essays: burying the lede. It means to ramble on and on without giving the reader enough information to tell what the piece is really about. I won't bury this one though: we'll be moving twelve (not ten)...

I'm baaaaaaack Didja miss me? That was a heck of a road trip, y'all, but we made it. Came back with some stories to tell, and some that we're not ready to tell yet, and some that we may never tell. That's the nature of stories, right? I even made it back in time to...

Under Water I am mildy clautrophobic, meaning I'm uncomfortable in enclosed spaces, but it's not debilitating. Long tunnels make me nervous, especially if they go underwater, like the Ted Williams that travels under Boston Harbor to Logan Airport or the Lincoln and...

Summertime Writing When I was younger, summer was a great time for writing for me. I had some free time on my hands and a little more room in my brain for thinking. Now, summer is filled with working and parenting. For the past two weeks, I've been traveling - first I...
YeahWrite #431 Weekly Writing Challenge: Popular Vote Winners and Editors’ Picks
Summer days Hey, YeahWriters, Christine here! I know that our Southern hemisphere friends are curling up in front of fireplaces and heaters, waiting for the ever-lengthening days to bring back the sun. But here at YeahWrite, most of the editors are taking some time to...
