Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

Time for School! School is back in session here in my little corner of SoCal. I'm proud of myself for resisting the urge to buy a thousand new notebooks and all of the colorful Post-Its. For me, the first day of school is tantamount to January 1. In fact, I think I...

Well, here we are. The final round of Lucky Number 13, YeahWrite's nonfiction Super Challenge. We don't have 13 writers, of course, but 12, and they'll be competing for those sweet cash prizes. This round you're free to write personal or persuasive essays,...

Easy Breezy August, the end of summer here in the greater Boston area, is amazing. Sure, it can be hot. But people clear out. It's so easy to do stuff. No lines at the stores, walking into restaurants without reservations, and much less traffic are just a few of the...

Winning - or advancing in - a writing competition should be a matter of skill, not luck. But I'll be very real with y'all: this time it almost came down to luck. In more than one of our groups, despite our distributed judging method, there were multiple-way ties. So I...

Thunderstruck As I write this, a small dog shivers on my lap, burying her head into the fold between my belly and my thigh. Thunder claps overhead, rattling the windows. It's Djilba; the fifth of six seasons in the Noongar (or Nyungar, Nyoongar, Nyoongah, Nyungah,...

Rough re-entry Some people (cough*Nate*cough) take a break from writing and return invigorated. They have new ideas, new energy, new passion for their work. And if that's you, I'm jealous, because when I take a break from writing it's like ... going to the gym. See, I...

Rest in Power "If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, you must be the one to write it." --Toni Morrison The world lost an amazing, influential writer this week. So many of us are heartbroken by the death of Toni Morrison. But...

Turn, turn, turn Show of hands: who here loves summer? So do I. I mean, I love fall, too, and spring. (I prefer to ignore winter, to Rowan's chagrin.) It's summer here in the US, of course, but we're on the cusp of fall. The days are already getting shorter, the sun...

Do Your Research So if you read last week's voting post, you already know I went whale watching last week. What you don't know is that when I searched a free photo website for a breaching humpback whale, like the one I saw, I got a whole lotta BAD whale...
