Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

Rain, Rain, Go Away I'm thinking I might need to build an ark because we are heading into days of rain. One thing I actually like about the weather here in New England is that it's rare to go more than two days without seeing the sun. Even though my home state of...

South Central YeahWrite One of the most amusing things about moving back to Australia has been keeping up with the grids at YeahWrite - and I know I'm not alone in this. As my morning walks weave past flowers and nesting birds, the headers on the posts turn to fall...

IT IS MY SEASON AND I DONT CARE WHO KNOWS HOW HAPPY I AM It's pouring rain outside. I just ate grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. The sun goes down at a reasonable @#!$!@# hour. And I have more energy than at any time of the year. Which is good, because it's...

Let's Taco Bout It Oh hey, Friday is NATIONAL TACO DAY and I couldn't be more excited. Can you tell? Except I can't get quality tacos in Massachusetts the way I can in my home state of California. MA is more of a lobsta state, which is good in its own way. I still...

I ain't afraid of no ghost I am, however, afraid of things that go bump in the night. And the monster that lives under my bed. And whatever it is that's hiding behind the furnace in our dimly-lit basement. You'll never catch me watching a typical horror flick (at...
Year of Fearless Writing – Don’t quit your day job (or maybe do)
Welcome to the Year of Fearless Writing! You write. I mean, that's why you're here. But how often do you say "I'm a writer?" And what's the difference between "I write" and "I'm a writer" anyway? Over the last five years, YeahWrite--besides being a great place to...
Alas, poor Yorick
... the five of you who know that the next line is "I knew him, Horatio" not "I knew him well" are feeling pretty smug right now, aren't you? Laugh while you can, because this month's poetry slam is no joking matter. Like Hamlet, we're going to elegize. eulogize?...
Welcome to YeahWrite’s Weekly Writing Challenge #442
For Science! When I first started writing for the grids, it took me a long time to lose some of the habits I'd developed writing scientific papers for years. Passive voice? BYE BYE. Long, convoluted sentences? I'm working on it. But one thing I refuse to let go....

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work I'm not sure I've ever said that without sarcasm before? But it's true. Getting good writing into your eye holes takes more than just an idea and a computer. It takes a team. Whether you're headed into the world of traditional publishing,...

Southbound The geese are flying south and I'm sad that I can't run away from winter too. At least Rowan will be happy as the Northern Hemisphere moves into her favorite season! Today is also National Lobster Day so at least there's that, although I don't think I'll be...
