Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

Rain on the Pumpkin I know I talked about Halloween in the kickoff post but it's HALLOWEEN. Unfortunately, here in the Boston area, it's supposed to rain all day and all night, which could put a serious damper on the evening festivities. We will still be handing out...

Writing Costume Halloween is just around the corner. We live near an elementary school so we always get a ton of trick-or-treaters. My youngest is fifteen and doesn't trick-or-treat any more, but last year he and his friends donned those giant blow-up t-rex costumes...
Super Challenge #14 Round 1 is Underway!
Friday is the first day of your work week! Fine, that's a horrible sentiment. But like most freelancers, I work weekends too. So just know that while you're working on your story, I'm working on something horrifically boring and academic. Still, I get excited every...

I've been conned Conferenced, that is. I'm writing to you from sunny Denver, where there's GLORIOUS snow on the ground and the air is thin enough to breathe and not full of disgusting water and what I'm saying is that Christine, who is also here, is miserable and...

Swallow This Today (Wednesday in the U.S.) is National Swallows Depart from San Juan Capistrano Day. This is quite the mouthful compared to tomorrow's National Bologna Day, but I'm sorta loving the swallow thing since I'm a bird nerd and all. In fact, I need a...

Sketch Me If You Can I was just reading an article about the inception of the television show Schitt's Creek. In it Dan Levy, the writer, producer, director, and actor of the show, talked about the experience of collaborating with his father, comedian Eugene Levy: “We...

Obligatory reminder thingie Hey, friends, there's less than a week left to register for Super Challenge #14. That's the one where instead of getting a badge for your blog from winning the popular vote, real judges might give you money. You focus on that, I'll focus on...

If You Can't Eat It, Shred It My youngest dog, who is six, has developed a mid-life counter surfing habit that is out of control. Her continued run of success just fuels her desire. I thought I could stop her if I instituted a zero food on the counter policy. But now...

Another Writing Metaphor This morning, just like I do every day, the first thing I did when I sat at my desk was check my email. Overnight there were over 50 new ones. I sifted through, checking off for deletion what I didn't need. When I was done, there were only...

Baby, it's cold id by dose I'm pretty sure my head has been filled with glue. Snot glue. Look, this is where my writing's at this week, take it or leave it. I'm in the middle of trying to figure out a complicated interaction in the novel, involving military personnel...
