Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

Indomitable So in August, my kids and I started taking Taekwon-do together. It's pretty physically intense, but before we were even allowed to start learning forms, attacks, and blocks, we had to memorize the five tenets of Taekwon-do: Courtesy, Integrity,...

Wandering Into the Cornfields Yeah, I wasn't even close to making my 2019 writing goals, but that's okay. I made them before I knew what the year had in store for me and sometimes health, career, and relationships need to take precedence. I'm confident I did the best...

Always Winter, and Never Christmas The first book I remember analyzing was The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, after my mother took it out of my hands -- I must have been all of nine, I think -- and said scornfully "You know Aslan is just Jesus, right?" Look, it...

Cutting through the fog Between the weather, school commitments, and the inevitable blur of the holiday season, my brain is feeling particularly foggy right now. Every time I sit down to write, it feels like walking blindly into the mist, and I'm too worried about...

Just Write Sometimes you want to write something and it's based on real events and to use what actually happened in your writing will have an adverse effect. Maybe it's a nonfiction essay where you can't directly call someone out because of repurcussions. Perhaps it's...

Glitter Season Sure, everyone has a favorite season. Pumpkin Spice season (hint: it's not spiced pumpkin)? Beach season? Me, I like Glitter Season. It starts at Halloween (or Diwali in years when Diwali comes first) and ends right around the Lunar New Year. In the...

Fa-la-la I can't help it: I'm a sucker for holiday carols. I'm not particularly religious and truth be told, I hate the snow, but no matter how Grinch-like I feel, all it takes is a cheerful rendition of Sleigh Ride or a four-part arrangement of In the Bleak...
YeahWrite #451 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Microprose
The jury is out I don't know about you, but November was a little of a bust for me in terms of writing. Between the holidays, a camping trip, and school-related activities for the kids, it was all I could do to keep up with YeahWrite, let alone my personal projects....
Year of Fearless Writing – So you’re a writer; now what?
Welcome to the Year of Fearless Writing! You write. I mean, that's why you're here. But how often do you say "I'm a writer?" And what's the difference between "I write" and "I'm a writer" anyway? Over the last five years, YeahWrite--besides being a great place to...
Another Chance to Get it Right
Well, it's December again. Like every year, I had the best intentions. I was going to write more. Specifically, I was going to write more poetry. I like what the process of writing poetry does for my brain. It makes me more concise, more richly metaphorical, and it...
