Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

Mastering your craft Last week there was a live-on-stage interview with David Suchet in my city that my lovely husband had acquired tickets for. Suchet is probably best known for his television and film portrayal of Hercule Poirot, but like so many of his compatriots...

What year is it anyway? I spent this week panicking because I thought all my February stuff needed to be done for YeahWrite. TURNS OUT, I've got a whole nother week to do that. Maybe it's because the Year of the Rat actually starts tomorrow? WHO KNOWS. Anyway, new...

Manatee Me When I saw this photo, I knew I had to choose it. I have always wanted to see manatees but the few times I've been to Florida, I wasn't in the places they frequent. In March, I'm going with my sister to West Palm Beach, which is right where...

See a Movie, then Write I have been going to a lot of movies over the past few months, after years of rarely seeing any. Writing a screenplay is obviously different from writing a short story, but you can get some interesting ideas from watching movies, like how time...

Rituals Every morning I get up at way-too-early-for-the-West-Coast, because I have East Coast clients that want to have meetings at a reasonable time by their schedule. I hit snooze exactly once. The second time Lizzo informs me that she just took a DNA test, I turn...

The Write Way I am glad to be in 2020, but this adjustment of writing the correct year on things is not as straightforward as my desire to be in this year. However many times I have to cross out 2019 and replace it with 2020, I hope to write more than the correct date...

Word Guilt Whenever my therapist asked me how my week went, I would always mumble to him about how I hadn't written anything. He found it interesting that I measured my week by the words I DIDN'T write. He asked me how many words I thought I had generated in a week,...

Attitude is key Kidding. I hate that crap. Attitude won't improve your pay scale (except perhaps, assuming your workplace is committed to fairness and not at all affected by systemic misogyny or racism even unconsciously), your access to healthcare, or your odds of...

Brrrrr My heater broke. For three days, no heat. It's winter here in New England. Needless to say, this development was not much fun. But I'm happy to report that as of this morning, all is well and the house is slowly warming up, one degree at a time, so I should be...

What Are You Going to Do? I'm going to be blunt: What are you going to do with your 2020? When I ask you at the end of the year what you're most proud of and what you want to brag about (assuming I remember to ask), what do you want to say? Knowing what you want is...
