Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

Scattered There's a lot going on in the world right now. I guess I could write that about any day in 2020, but this week feels especially full, like long-tightened tectonic plates have maybe begun to shift. People are putting their strength behind any lever they have,...

Winter is ... here I'm not sure what the weather's like where you are, but it's very confused here. Yesterday began with frost on the grass and air so cold my breath fogged in it as I walked. By midday, I was peeling layers of clothing off, and in the evening, I was...

Tell me a story When the world–the outside world or our internal landscape–gets too big to look at, one way we process is with stories. Stories are important: they let us examine aspects of reality, learn about each other, or access our feelings. Right now we're...

Unexpected places The world today is simultaneously huge and tiny. It can be intimidating to look around and think "what am I doing to make a difference?" But the good news is, no matter who you are or where you are, you can do something. Even babynames.com has a way...

Collective Action Community is critical. Humans don't "lone wolf" well (and the lone wolf is a myth anyway). Do you know what "fittest" means in survival of the fittest? It means best suited to the environment, including the fitness of the collective. As we move into...

Black Lives Matter Yes, that's an unequivocal statement. Not just the "perfect victims" sleeping in their beds or the ones whose murders are recorded. Every single one. Every Black life. If you're going out to protest this weekend, stay safe, know your rights, and we...

Editor's Note As I write this, thousands of people are in the streets in cities nationwide. Worldwide. The US President is calling for the use of military force against citizens. As writers, readers, and editors we know how a story is told matters. "Protesters were...
20/20 Hindsight – Fifth Variation
Bigger is better? We've been pretty stingy with words over the last few months. This month, we're feeling a little more generous! Like, so generous! And it's not just because our sample story originally came in at 2,700 words, at least 2,100 of which are "darlings."...
The World (of) Series
I'm counting on you. Okay, I didn't pick this month's poetry slam for all the puns, but I sure could have. I could use a little humor these days, don't know about you. Anyway. So about June. I've been thinking a lot these days about relations, and connections, and the...

Carpe Liam I've been thinking a lot about this year's high school senior class. A friend's son, Liam, graduated with honors last week. He won't get a ceremony or the chance to toss that frisbee hat into the air, but none of that will matter as much when he's a college...
