Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

Discrepancies I used to have an entire Tumblr that was just pictures like the one in the header image for this post. Beds, rumpled, white sheets, fluffy duvets. Almost always shades of taupe and light grey. Big windows, no curtains (or just sheers). Sunlight streaming...
20/20 Hindsight – Ninth Variation
Everyone's a poet Or at least, that's true this month! At its heart, a poem is often a story using emotion rather than narrative structure to draw the reader in. One of the ways we prove the humanity of our characters - fiction or non- is by helping the reader connect...

I have a pretty good visual memory... for reading. In fact, not only can I tell you what I read, I can tell you where on the page it was. And the shapes of the letters line up in my brain and make sense to me. So much sense that I was the state spelling champion. Five...

Windy Mary All three of my patio umbrellas blew over last night during the storm that raced through my neighborhood. I'm not surprised. But also, I find myself worrying about Mary Poppins using this as her primary mode of transportation. Umbrellas don't actually seem...
Welcome to YeahWrite’s Weekly Writing Challenge #494
Brain Fog Yesterday, while I was making dinner, I had an idea about what I would write here. Today, less than 24 hours later, that particular brilliance eludes me. I am a logical person, a scientist, with a good memory, at least historically, with one particular...

Everything but writing... I've sat down to write this post at least five times today. Instead, I've: Gone for a motorcycle ride Picked apples Baked a fig cake Invoiced (ok that needed doing, though, I really like eating food and living under a roof) Played...

Seedy Solution I'll bet you're wondering what I did with my moth-infested bird seed. You've probaby been worrying about it all week. No? Well, I poured it on the ground in the mulch along the side of my front yard, so the dogs wouldn't eat it. And now, everyone is...
Welcome to YeahWrite’s Weekly Writing Challenge #493
The Winter of my Summer An understatement: This summer was pretty nervous. In addition to *gesturing vaguely at the world*, I lost my desire to write outside of work. Just nothing in the tank. A much stronger desire overwhelmed me to comfort myself by rewatching Parks...
Congratulations to the Winners of YeahWrite’s Super Challenge #17
On the edge of seventeen How is it possible that we've had seventeen Super Challenges already? It's a rush - and a letdown - every time we get to announce the winners. But don't worry: #18 is coming up in just a few months! But right now? The judges' results are in...

Where there's smoke... First off, an apology to everything east of the Rockies, where you're about to get the smoke from the Northwest fires. If it's any consolation, it doesn't look like it's going to be nearly as bad there as it still is here even with a stiff...
