Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
Congratulations to the shortlist at YeahWrite Super Challenge #18
The Waiting Game Waiting is the worst part of any writing you do, whether it's the Bar Exam or your submissions spreadsheet. We know it; we're writers too. So as we tried on this new competition format, you bet there was a lot of behind-the-scenes debate about whether...
YeahWrite #504 Weekly Writing Challenge
It's a Mood. I've been taking long walks lately to clear my head, get some exercise, and quell the cabin fever. Last night, in a rush to get out before sunset, I just poked at a Spotify playlist and took off. Turns out the playlist I chose was exclusively movie...
20/20 Hindsight – Putting it all together
The final piece This is it: the culmination of a year of work! We've looked at your stories and essays inside out and upside down; we've changed their shape, size, and even point of view. Whether you participated every month or you decided to pick and choose the...
2020 Poetry Slam Roundup
Coda The last piece of music, the last stanza, the last closing remark. It's December, and that means it's time for the last poetry slam. This year we didn't focus on forms as much as techniques - I hope everyone learned something to take away, even if it's not for...
YeahWrite #503 Weekly Writing Challenge
Stranger Things 2020 is the year of strange, and as we enter the holiday season, that strangeness only intensifies. When this post goes live, many Americans will be recovering from the gluttonous feast we call Thanksgiving. And while I'm hopeful that most of us will...

YeahWrite #501 Weekly Writing Challenge
Your words matter My writing bag has a Ray Bradbury quote on it: You must stay drunk on writing so reality doesn't destroy you. People would see it and ask, "Are you a writer?" I used to answer, "Well, I like to write." At the heart of it, YeahWrite is about moving...

YeahWrite #500 Weekly Writing Challenge: Popular Vote Winners and Editors’ Picks
In the end I've put off writing this until the last minute. I know. It turns out nobody, including me, writes better like that. But in a way, as long as I put off writing this post, the last grid didn't close for me. And for more than half a decade, that's been my...
YeahWrite #500 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Popular Voting
Bittersweet I'm not gonna lie. I have some big mixed emotions about writing this last voting post. I've been involved in the weekly grids in various capacities, starting as a participant, since 2012. That's a lot of grids over an 8 year period, and I feel a bit misty...
