Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
YeahWrite #511 Weekly Writing Challenge
Nothing New Under the Sun As a fan of history, I've been reading up on the effects of the 1918 "Spanish" flu epidemic on society. The flu hit right when World War I was gearing up and several political and social upheavals (the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the...
YeahWrite #510 Weekly Writing Challenge
POP! I'm having one of those weeks where I'm simply trying to keep my head above water. Between multiple professional and personal deadlines, a 24-hour doom, I mean, news cycle, and a frustrating inability to ask for help, my brain feels like it could at any time...
YeahWrite #509 Weekly Writing Challenge
Here, lizard, lizard... Some phrases just stick with you. That headline? That's from an ad that you had to be in sort of a specific age at a specific time to remember. But if I say it out loud, my whole cohort will join in. Those are the kind of lines we love to...
Registration is OPEN for Super Challenge #19!
It's a new year, and we're ready to dive right into our next competition. With everything that happened in 2020 (murder hornets, anyone? That should be fiction, not non-), we're sure you've got lots of stories to tell, and we want to hear them! Registration opens...
YeahWrite #508 Weekly Writing Challenge
Out with the old Well, look at that. I'm the lucky duck who gets to kick the old year to the curb and welcome in the new one. There's no guarantee, of course, that 2021 will treat us any more kindly than 2020 did, but I'm generally an optimist, and I like beginnings,...
Navigating Prompts: You Are Here
You are here There it is: the perfect prompt. A prompt that appeals to you in every way. A prompt that excites you so much that you can only hope to do it justice. Or maybe it's the opposite. Maybe you've got 24 hours to respond to this prompt and no idea where to...
Congratulations to the Winners of YeahWrite’s Super Challenge #18
What a short, strange trip it's been I suppose you're wondering why I've called you all here today. Kidding. I've just always wanted to say that, and this seemed like a good year to cross it off my bucket list. I also want to say thank you for joining us in the...
YeahWrite #507 Weekly Writing Challenge
Thwack We have the stump of a dead tree in our backyard that has to come out. Its roots extend pretty deeply into our clay soil, and we've dug up as much of the earth around it as possible. So last week, I went at the stubborn roots with an axe. Feet hip-width apart,...
YeahWrite #506 Weekly Writing Challenge
Tune in I took myself out for a coffee yesterday. I didn't take a book, I didn't check my social media accounts on my phone, I didn't take a notebook and pen. I had no distractions, no camouflage. In the midst of a busy coffeeshop, filled with cool jazz, hot...
YeahWrite #505 Weekly Writing Challenge
Touch Up I got my tattoo touched up today. It was included in the original price, but I tipped accordingly because whoa that was a lot of work. You see, the color wasn't deep enough, so it faded too much, too fast. And the color was supposed to make a particular point...
