Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
YeahWrite #522 Weekly Writing Challenge
Last week, our community lost one of its most steadfast members, Margaret Shafer. Margaret first started posting her essays on the YeahWrite weekly grids in December of 2016, and she hardly missed a single week since then. She was an active participant in the...
YeahWrite #521 Weekly Writing Challenge
Permission Lately I've found myself in the position of having to say "no" a lot—no, you can't have more screen time; no, we can't go out for burgers; no, you can't go play until you're done with your homework. And then, last week, we decided to give the kids a "yes"...
Navigating Prompts: Characters
Who goes there? It's possible to tell a story with no characters. Ray Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains" comes to mind, although even that sinks to anthropomorphism a bit. (CW: animal death) The first paragraph of The Haunting of Hill House is practically a...
Congratulations to the Winners of YeahWrite’s Super Challenge #19
It's time Like our prompt phrase, the headline for this post can have a lot of meanings. First, "it's time" to make our announcements. But also, you know what contributed to the success of a lot of these essays? That's right: "it's time." The best seasoning for an...
YeahWrite #520 Weekly Writing Challenge
Too much My job is precarious, like much of the world today. I get assignments to teach classes based on student enrollment numbers. This semester, the numbers were just not on my side, and I joined many others in the unemployment lines. Without classes to teach, I...
Registration is OPEN for YeahWrite’s 20th Super Challenge
First of all, are you kidding me? Twenty Super Challenges? We've been doing this for five years? Kids that weren't even born for Super Challenge One can read now? Well. I guess that's another generation of writers. Here's hoping we'll still be writing these "here's...
YeahWrite #519 Weekly Writing Challenge
One is the loneliest number This week, I've been thinking a lot about community and how to get more involved with local (to me) writing groups. Writing can be a woefully lonely business, or at least a woefully alone business. It can feel like you're shouting into a...
Let’s celebrate YeahWrite’s 10th birthday!
Happy birthday, YeahWrite! We’ve been making words together for ten years, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than by making more words… out loud, with you! Join the YeahWrite editorial staff and your fellow YeahWriters on Friday, April 16 and/or...
YeahWrite #518 Weekly Writing Challenge
Are you ready? I sure am. Ready for it to be anything but winter, that is. If you've been reading YeahWrite's weekly posts for long, you may know that I walk my dogs in the woods near my house every morning. I'm so tired of the scarf-coat-hat-gloves routine that when...
The final round of Super Challenge #19 is underway!
The Chair-y On Top We've all had bad weeks. Weird ones. Hard ones. The cherry on top of this week, in which it seemed everything spilled, broke, broke down, or some diabolical combination of the above, was my desk chair breaking. Because I leaned over to pick up a...
