Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
Navigating Prompts: Action Prompts
Aaaaand.... ACTION! In the Western tradition - which most competitions follow - a story isn't a story unless something happens. Decisions need to be made, actions need to be taken, characters need to undergo transformations emotional or literal. Otherwise, what you've...

Candy I used to stock my shelves with books and music without really paying much attention to if I liked them or not. Instead, I acquired things that the person I thought I'd like to be--the person I wanted people to think I was--would enjoy. I watched Movies with...

Risks, rewards, and regrets There's an inspirational poster on the wall of the Taekwondo studio where my kids and I take classes. It reads: "If you want to be good at something, you must first be willing to be bad at it." And you know what? I'm really bad at jump...

Purple, red, and shocking white Natalie's post last week reminded me of a gift I inadvertantly gave myself. Last year this time, when anxiety was high and everything was a question, I started taking photos of blooming plants I'd see on the get-out-of-the-house walks I...
Super Challenge #20 Round 1 is Underway!
April showers bring May... Allergies. Also flowers, I guess. I had no idea until I started wearing masks and not getting sick how many of my seasonal colds were exacerbated by having moved away and back and given up any tolerance at all I had for my local pollen....

Too much The mountain of laundry to be folded on my bed. How much podcasting content I cram into my head. Layer upon layer of dust on the piano. The two-year-old chattering softly in the background of my life's soundtrack. Life is really full at this stage, so I have...
Navigating Prompts: Element-Based Genres
Sneaking a peek If you're anything like me, you're given to sneaking a peek into the market basket of the person ahead of you in line. Sure, it's gotten a bit more difficult with social distancing, but I can still make out a lot of the contents. I usually try to...

Masquerade balling We're right in the middle of Djeran in my part of the world. The days are getting shorter, and cooler for the most part, though we still get the occasional "surprise, it's shorts weather!" days. Flying ants are getting into everything; gardens,...

Migration Spring is in the air, and change is coming. The hummingbirds will arrive back in Massachusetts shortly, followed by the orioles. I'll be putting out feeders for both, bird nerd that I am. Change can be hard, but it also often signals a rebirth, small or...
