Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

Vacation Mode: On When this post goes live, I'll be on my first vacation in... well, honestly I don't even remember the last time I went on vacation (pre-Covid times so too long!). And on this vacation, I'm attending my first wedding in two years. The world may be...
YeahWrite #540 Weekly Writing Challenge
Impromptu Of all the challenges of the past sneaking-up-on-two years, the one I wasn't expecting was the difficulty in coming up with prompts. Prompts are often inspired by what we're reading, what we're talking about, what we see and do. The things that inspire us....

Twenty-twentywhat? Welcome to your second pandemic summer the twenty-first YeahWrite Super Challenge! It's fitting that it's in 2021, but we didn't cleverly plan for that or anything, and anyway it's also 5781 and 1442. Here at YeahWrite we've been loving the Super...
YeahWrite #539 Weekly Writing Challenge
All work and no play Sure, it's an aphorism, but there's definitely a kernel of truth to it. When your writing starts to feel more like work and less like play, maybe it's time to take a breather. Take a half hour and write something completely different. Try out a...
YeahWrite #538 Weekly Writing Challenge
Writing Together, Alone Writer friends had invited me to work together in the past, but I never took them up on it. I always thought "My problem with writing is focus. Why would I meet a person for a writing date and add yet another distraction to the mix?" Well, as...
Navigating Prompts: Setting Descriptions
Location, location, location If you read a lot of—or any—fan fiction, you'll know that one of the most common tropes is "the coffeehouse AU." That is, take all the characters from the movie or book and... put them in a coffeehouse. Who's the bartender? Who's the one...
YeahWrite #537 Weekly Writing Challenge
I found my thrills This week I picked up a few copies of an anthology that I have work in. Another anthology, I should say. This isn't my first, but the thrill of seeing my name in print, especially in a physical copy that I can hold in my hands and turn the pages on,...
YeahWrite #536 Weekly Writing Challenge
(Co)Work Hard, Play Hard For years, writing almost every day was one of the easiest things for me to do, but before long, life and other things began to get in the way and writing began to mold into yet another chore needing to be completed. Projects gathered dust,...
YeahWrite #535 Weekly Writing Challenge
I never metaphor I didn't like Probably my favorite writing metaphor is working in the garden. Possibly because it's one of the few times since FEBRUARY OF LAST FREAKIN YEAR that I get to spend quiet time alone with my thoughts and my music. But also possibly because...
YeahWrite #534 Weekly Writing Challenge
Unmoored This is the first summer in a long, long time—like, since I was a student—where I don't have every minute scheduled. It used to be day camps and childcare for the kids, and the regular 9-5 for me. Even after I left my office job to pursue writing, I had...
