Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
Super Challenge #22 Round 1 is Underway!
Writer's Block Who hasn't tasted the bitter fruit of ... THE BLOCK? You're staring at your prompts, the timer is counting down, and you've got nothing. Not a single idea or word. It happens to the editors at YeahWrite, too, in case you didn't know. For example, I have...
YeahWrite #553 Weekly Writing Challenge
Hello, Darkness... I'll admit it. I'm a weirdo. I am one of the few people in this country who love the end of Daylight Saving Time. The bright, early mornings have me bouncing out of bed and ready to take on the day (as a non-morning person, this is a miraculous...
YeahWrite #552 Weekly Writing Challenge
On the road again I spent the last week driving across the country. Along the way I learned some things: Iowa has amazing public restrooms, Wyoming is flatter than you think, and I haven't been alone for 16 straight hours since the pandemic kicked off almost 2 years...
Navigating Prompts: Combination Prompts
The more, the merrier Writing to prompts can be a lot of fun, and a great way to spark ideas. So if one prompt is good, more than one should be fantastic, right? They can be! But incorporating several prompts naturally into a story or essay takes a certain amount of...
YeahWrite #551 Weekly Writing Challenge
If it hadn't been for those darn kids... What happens when you pull off the scary mask and see who's really holding you back? Is it your kids? Is it your boss? Or is it—drumroll, please—yourself? We all tend to be our own worst enemies, and hiding under a sheet won't...
YeahWrite #550 Weekly Writing Challenge
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings I love October. The wool jackets and the falling leaves. Little kids in costumes, freaky movie marathons. It just doesn't get any better. But about two-thirds of the way through my wheels screech and I veer off the...
YeahWrite #549 Weekly Writing Challenge
Who goes there? This season of life has been especially harrowing, calling me to transform at a moment's notice. A month ago, I had no work. Now, I have been thrown two compressed writing classes, with a week to prepare for each of them. Two months ago, my eldest son...
YeahWrite #548 Weekly Writing Challenge
Writing when I'm not writing It's been a tricky few weeks for me as I deal with the death of a close family friend and the grief and mourning that accompanies his passing. Naturally, that's meant that putting words on a page has taken a back seat over this time. But...

YeahWrite #547 Weekly Writing Challenge
Spoopy Season Fall may have officially begun one week ago, but there is something about that October 1 feeling that has me pulling out my cozy sweaters and boots. I love this time of year. I love the changing of the leaves, cooler weather, the Seattle sky morphing...
