Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
YeahWrite #572 Weekly Writing Challenge
What's in a name? There's a kid with the same name as me. Maybe this happens to you all the time. Maybe your name is Christine, or Jessica, or Ram, or Sunita, or Akeyla. But it doesn't happen to me. And I find myself watching this kid for similarities (lots, they have...
YeahWrite #571 Weekly Writing Challenge
Person, place, thing I'm reading Fonda Lee's Jade City right now. It's a modern second-world urban fantasy, where jade bestows near-magical gifts on its wearers and rival clans jockey for position and power. One of the things I love about this book is how Lee blurs...
YeahWrite #570 Weekly Writing Challenge
Word Hurdle I guess it's happened before. Words With Friends was a thing for a while, wasn't it? And Codewords, maybe. But neither led to my Facebook feed being a never-ending register of game results. I joked that sometime in the future alien beings would digitally...
The final round of Super Challenge #23 is underway!
Did you miss us? The final round of YeahWrite's 23d Super Challenge starts, well, now. Our judges are waiting with bated (not baited, ew, check those homophones) breath for your essays. I have a hunch it's going to be a close one, based on the great essays in the...

It's the (not so) little things The world can feel overwhelming sometimes. The twenty-four-hour news cycle doesn't do much to assuage that; leaping from one story of disaster and suffering to the next, with only advertisements to buy more, bigger, shinier as segues....
Congratulations to the Round 1 winners at YeahWrite Super Challenge #23
Crunch time Forty-eight hours is not a lot of time to write a well-crafted essay - as we all know! - but that's part of the challenge, isn't it? The pressure of a deadline can be a huge motivating factor, and sometimes it comes right down to the wire. Our judges get a...
The Scarlet Quill Society: Editing on the Go
Welcome (back) to the Scarlet Quill Society! This year at YeahWrite our free workshop focuses on everything BUT the writing, with an editorial series that'll take the words right out of your mouth and put them on the page. Of course, we're also including some tips on...
YeahWrite #568 Weekly Writing Challenge
Push Through The end of February is usually where I falter, all of those new and shiny goals I made in the new year suddenly feeling impossible to reach. Whether it be imposter syndrome, the cold coupled with laziness, or the burnout of entering Pandemic: Year Three,...
YeahWrite #567 Weekly Writing Challenge
Promptly One of the reasons I know I would make a terrible parent is that I cannot stop myself from annoying kids. They're like little straight line factories. For example, one of the kids in my life is playing some Facebook game where they draw a thing and you're...
Super Challenge #23 Round 1 is Underway!
Sowing the Seeds My seed order came today. A whole manila envelope filled with little packets of hope. I don't know yet what the fate of all those seeds will be. Some will sprout; some might not. It's entirely within the realm of possibility that my cats will eat some...
