Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
The Scarlet Quill Society: Developmental Edits
But first, an important announcement This month's meeting of the Scarlet Quill society will not be held on the Second Sunday as usual, because that's Mother's Day in the US and we want to make sure everyone has a chance to eat brunch with their mom (or kids) if that's...
YeahWrite #577 Weekly Writing Challenge
Comfort Watch When I get stressed I have trouble taking in new media. In the past (mumble) years the only new media I've watched is: Fury Road, The Old Guard, Our Flag Means Death. Yeah. That's it. When I'm stressed out I reach for the tropes I know, the comfort...
YeahWrite #576 Weekly Writing Challenge
Connections I reconnected today with a friend from my hometown. We weren't super close growing up, but we've known each other since kindergarten and we ran in the same friend groups. We sang in the school choir together, we both did musicals. It's entirely likely that...
YeahWrite #575 Weekly Writing Challenge
Teatro ZinZanni Spoiler alert: If you have any interest in seeing this show, skip this intro. Or read and forget it immediately. Part of the fun was not knowing what to expect. The writing was a big platter of cheese. The actor/performers wandered around the hall...
YeahWrite #574 Weekly Writing Challenge
Puzzle pieces I’ve been struggling with putting complete thoughts together in writing this week. My mind’s been full of snippets of stories; beginnings and middles and endings that don’t play nicely with each other. Combined with a series of rejections and...
Let’s celebrate YeahWrite’s 11th birthday!
Happy birthday, YeahWrite! Last year we celebrated our 10th birthday with all of you, and we had so much fun that we thought we'd do it again! Please join us on Friday, April 29 and/or Saturday, April 30 for a casual get-together complete with a Q&A and live...
YeahWrite #573 Weekly Writing Challenge
April Fools I loathe April Fool's Day. Even as a kid, where a harmless whoopee cushion prank would send most into fits, I was the ol' curmudgeon snarling at anyone who dared try and play a prank on me. Someone must have got me good in a past life. But maybe you can...
The Scarlet Quill Society: Pitfalls and Traps
Welcome (back) to the Scarlet Quill Society! This year at YeahWrite our free workshop focuses on everything BUT the writing, with an editorial series that'll take the words right out of your mouth and put them on the page. Of course, we're also including some tips on...
Registration is OPEN for YeahWrite’s 24th Super Challenge
Not your average writing competition Seven years ago, a few of the YeahWrite editors put their heads together to design a writing competition that would be as much fun to run as it would be to enter. It took a little tweaking here and there, but we think we've really...
Congratulations to the Winners of YeahWrite’s Super Challenge #23
I got an ulcer waiting for this post! People have asked us why we release feedback the way we do. It's because we want you to sit with it. That's the short answer. The long answer is that both positive and negative feedback lands more gently if you don't know yet if...
