Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] What's inspiring you? I love books and movies. They've always served as inspiration for my own writing. Seeing the way another writer crafted a story not only helps me learn, but can push me a little when I'm not sure how I want to...
yeah write #281 weekend writing showcase
It’s the weekend, so the moonshine grid is open When this post goes live, I'll likely be stuck on the interstate in rush hour traffic as tropical storm Hermine brings her worst to my city. I'll be ready for a big glass of wine and some excellent reading when I finally...

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]They say the devil's in the details. Sometimes that's details like the textiles depicted in a Safavid manuscript (why did I take this commission, this might be the fiddliest piece of reproduction I've ever fiddled with), and...
Quitters are Winners
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]For this month's nonfiction knowhow we're going to focus on two conflicting aphorisms. The first is "winners never quit; quitters never win" and the second is "quit while you're ahead." I'm not talking about quitting writing...

I know it doesn't feel like it today, when the Real Feel Index says that I'm sitting in a room that's literally halfway to the boiling point of water, but summer is winding down and coming to an end. Kids are headed back to school, and for some of us (not me, thanks,...

The sky's the limit Constellations in the city are broken things. In the city it is never completely dark even when the street lamp outside my window is broken and the entire neighborhood is asleep. Low-hanging clouds make it brighter, not darker, with reflected...

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Power of observation Who hasn't felt like they're drained of writing ideas? I've felt this way, maybe a thousand times. One method I like to use to kickstart my creativity is practicing precise observation, aka "paying attention."...

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Two-thirds through I'm a sucker for a first-of-the-month that ushers in a new season. It feels like a good time for reflection. Here in the U.S., it's back to school. For many, the kids are in class already (though we have another...
