Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

The stories we tell ourselves at night Last night I dreamt I was Gulliver and my cats were Lilliputians strapping me down with rope and then we were in a basket attached to a hot air balloon floating over Lake Michigan. My partner is on tour right now and I have the...

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Speaking up Last week, I lost a reader for the first time—in public anyway. I was disappointed, of course, but I can say that it was easier than I thought to let it go and not feel my usual sense of guilt or shame. I wrote what I...

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The business of unpleasant things I ruined my son's life today. I made him go to the dentist and get a haircut. I'm used to being terrible; I make him do all sorts of things like chores and eating and such. I take a "too bad, so...
From intent to intensity
No $#!7, there I was: writing about the most horrifying moment of my life. I wrote, and I wrote. I sure did write the heck out of that story, which was a story about the most horrifying moment of my life. I was so scared in that moment. That's why I wrote about it. It...
Nine… Eight…. Seven….
45 is the magic number for this month's poetry slam. 45 syllables, that is: the 45 syllables, in decreasing lines, of the form known as nonet. I know this is the point where I usually get bogged down in some big long history lesson, but the fact is that there just...
yeah write #285 weekend writing showcase
It’s the weekend, so the moonshine grid is open All I can think about lately is sleep. I fantasize about it as I'm feeding the baby or cleaning up after the dog. Nodding off at night during Veep is a regular ritual now. Tell me, what are you fantasizing about? Yeah...

You don't have to be the first one to the finish line to be the winner. The length of time it takes you to produce your work doesn't necessarily affect when a reader will enjoy it. For example, I was definitely the last of my friends to see the new Ghostbusters, but...

A happy conviction My seven-year-old son has recently discovered the Moomintroll books by Tove Jansson. And by "discovered" I mean: I have been shoving them in his face for months and he finally consented to read one. I couldn't be prouder. There are a hundred reasons...
