Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
YeahWrite #590 Weekly Writing Challenge
Attitude adjustment I bought a new notebook the other day. [Insert joke about writers and blank notebooks here.] It's not just any notebook, though - it's a goal-setting journal specifically intended to help me improve my martial arts practice. Yes, this mild-mannered...
YeahWrite #589 Weekly Writing Challenge
Artists Need to Celebrate and To Be Celebrated A few years ago a large writers conference invited me to read an essay I wrote. Being in the spotlight is not my thing. The idea of subjecting my work to a room full of peers gave me hives. When I told my partner about...
YeahWrite #588 Weekly Writing Challenge
Rip it, ribbit I haven't done a lot of writing this week. It's been one of those weeks where everything I write feels prim and stale and unoriginal. Everyone else's writing has looked amazing and innovative, and I've felt like I'm just churning out the same old pap....
YeahWrite #587 Weekly Writing Challenge
'Cause baby, you're a... I hate fireworks, and unfortunately for me and my two dogs, my neighbors love them. If you don't live in the United States, just know that this week is the primetime of loud, colorful, explosive booms, and my neighbors lovingly decided to...
YeahWrite #586 Weekly Writing Challenge
Just Deserts Yeah, it's from 'deserve' and not 'dessert' so that's how it's spelled, but I'm taking this as 'pun intended' because I'm spending this week fishing in the desert. Yes, fishing. Because deserts don't look like you probably think they do. This is another...
The Scarlet Quill Society: Sensitivity Readers
Welcome (back) to the Scarlet Quill Society! This year at YeahWrite our free workshop focuses on everything BUT the writing, with an editorial series that'll take the words right out of your mouth and put them on the page. Of course, we're also including some tips on...
Registration is OPEN for YeahWrite’s 25th Super Challenge
Micro what now? We love stories of all shapes and sizes. Flash fiction and creative nonfiction - stories and essays under 1000 words - have been our mainstay for over seven years. But sometimes we like to shake things up a little, and this summer seems like a great...
Congratulations to the Winners of YeahWrite’s Super Challenge #24
Onomatopoeia Look, it's a better header than "carnival noises, ding ding ding" but that's what's going through our heads this week as we cheer for our Super Challenge winners! This turned out to be one of our harder prompts, with many writers struggling to interpret...
YeahWrite #585 Weekly Writing Challenge
Easy does it If you hang out with us on Discord, you may have noticed things have slowed down a little this month - and that's okay! Sometimes we all need to take a breath and take stock. Where am I at with my writing? What's inspiring me lately, and what isn't? Where...
YeahWrite #584 Weekly Writing Challenge
Random A friend recently said that if they were ever on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? they would use other writers as their lifeline because they always know random facts. It made me laugh. I'm not sure I'd be as well rounded as other potential lifelines, but the...
