Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
YeahWrite #596 Weekly Writing Challenge
Birthday Blues Blues perhaps isn't the right word, but I do love a good alliteration. This week, I turned 37. I'm not one to fret over growing another year older, but I find with each passing year it's harder not to compare myself to others and the milestones I have...
YeahWrite #595 Weekly Writing Challenge
Oh, that's why I think we've all had that moment where we question ourselves. Where we ask why. Why am I even writing when nobody's reading this? Why am I driving 1500 miles when it's exhausting and expensive? Why am I still in school when it's just a bunch of...
The Scarlet Quill Society: Nonfiction
Welcome (back) to the Scarlet Quill Society! This year at YeahWrite our free workshop focuses on everything BUT the writing, with an editorial series that'll take the words right out of your mouth and put them on the page. Of course, we're also including some tips on...
YeahWrite #594 Weekly Writing Challenge
How does it feel? This month's issue of Poets & Writers features Zambian writer Namwali Serpell on the cover with an intriguing pull quote. "I don't want to tell you what happened," she says. "I want to tell you how it felt." I've been thinking on this lately....
Congratulations to the YeahWrite Super Challenge #25 Shortlist!
Short and sweet It's okay - we know you're really here for the results, so we won't keep you waiting long. But before we get to the shortlist, let's take a look at some of the trends we saw across the board. Creative takes on the prompts! While we don't truly...
YeahWrite #593 Weekly Writing Challenge
Wedgie I forgot to put a writing competition into my calendar, and when I got the challenge email this past weekend I realized I had booked myself up and compartmentalized my writing time to an hour here and 20 minutes there. Honestly, I thought I’d have to pack it...
YeahWrite #592 Weekly Writing Challenge
Let it go This week I've been thinking about when to say I'm done with a work in progress. You've probably heard some version of the old adage perfect is the enemy of good and it's never felt truer for me than now. The deep need to perfect a story before I submit it...
Super Challenge #25 is Underway!
Big stories, little spaces Hi, and welcome to YeahWrite's second official microfiction challenge. We used to run micros all the time on our free grids - folks seemed to get a kick of telling big stories with a very limited number of words. And so here we are again,...
YeahWrite #591 Weekly Writing Challenge
Fear of the Finish Every writer goes through slumps, whether it be actual writers block, a busy life, or whatever hurdle is thrown before you right when you sit down at your desk. For me, I'm currently experiencing a new one, one I've deemed Fear of the Finish. I've...
