Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
Congratulations to the Round 1 winners at YeahWrite Super Challenge #4
We've left Round One of the Super Challenge in the dust, and I can just see Round Two over the horizon. Once again, anything that went right is entirely due to our admin team's untiring work behind the scenes, and anything you hate is probably my fault. Before we...
YeahWrite #316 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Microprose
Love 'em and leave 'em I'm in love with my own words. I admit it. There are times I look at a page and I cannot quite fathom cutting a single syllable. But my job as a writer is to figure out what's at the heart of my words and to whittle away everything around that....
YeahWrite #316 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Fiction|Poetry
Sitting On My Hands This week I've been taking a short break from writing. Instead, I've been focusing on reading other people's beautiful writing. It hasn't much mattered what genre of writing, or even the subject matter. I've voraciously consumed literary essays,...
Resuscitating your darlings
"It's not a journal entry, it's a personal essay." That's something I say a lot when I'm making edits. Also this: "Your essay needs to be more than a list of events interspersed with your feels." What's the difference, really, though? And why does it matter? For this...
Nothing more than feelings?
All right, poets, it's your turn. April was National Poetry Month, so this month instead of a slam we're going to talk about how to read and critique all that work you generated for your #poemaday before you unleash it on an unsuspecting Internet. Or, if you've been...
YeahWrite #316 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Personal Essays & Mostly True Stories
What is Creative Nonfiction? Sometimes it’s helpful to get back to basics. So what do we mean when we talk about writing creative nonfiction, particularly in its first person essay form? The “nonfiction” part is pretty simple – here at YeahWrite we’re looking for your...
YeahWrite #316 Weekly Writing Challenge Kickoff
It's Not New, But It's Good I was recently reading an article about how to get started writing. It wasn't necessarily genre-specific, but the advice was pretty solid, if nothing new. (A better person would have remembered where she saw this article and would have...

YeahWrite #315 Weekly Writing Challenge: Popular Vote Winners
Let it... rain Here in the Pacific Northwest we're locking down our windows and pulling on our wellies as the 'mega moisture plume' makes a mockery of the passing of the vernal equinox. Even that last Easter egg waiting to be found in someone's yard is damp and...
YeahWrite #315 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Popular Voting
Rain, rain, go away We've been having a rainy few days here in New England and that makes me grumpy. Fortunately, I have some reading and voting to distract me! Even if you have a sunny day where you are, I hope you will take time to read and vote too. Popular...
