Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

YeahWrite #321 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Microprose
One Isn't The Loneliest Number Hoorah! It's microprose time again. I'm filling in for Christine through the northern hemisphere summer, and I'm so excited. Microprose holds a very special place in my heart. For the past three years, I've participated in a weekly flash...
YeahWrite #321 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Fiction|Poetry
Word Mice I think of them as word mice hiding in little pockets of my stories. These mice are filler words such as seem, turn, and reach with tails and little claws that burrow into the insulation of a story I'm building. They're tricky. Sometimes writers need these...
YeahWrite #321 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Personal Essays & Mostly True Stories
Write for your purpose. There's this email archive that's been haunting me for months now and I finally decided this weekend I'd try to tame it. Somewhere in the thousands of emails I found a three-year-old discussion among some editors about someone's post being not...
YeahWrite #321 Weekly Writing Challenge Kickoff
Is it Sunday again already? Memorial Day, a federal holiday here in the US, was last Monday, so most people had the day off from work. That made it a short week at my day job. I don't know about you, but short weeks somehow always feel longer than regular weeks (which...

YeahWrite #320 Weekly Writing Challenge: Popular Vote Winners
OK, but was it made of cheese or not? 51 years ago today, the first US spacecraft soft-landed on another world. Well, ok, on the Moon. It's a whole nother round thing out there in space, though, you know? Moments like these spark our imagination in so many ways....
got filk?
Let's take a mid-season break! Where I'm sitting, it's almost midsummer. Editor Asha, in Australia, is watching midwinter approach. But no matter where in the world you are, it's a season of song. Some of us are singing around beach bonfires, others are caroling or...
Think Outside the Thesaurus
A Glancing Blow Do you ever notice, when you're editing, that you have a "favorite word?" Mine, apparently, is "glance." In the rough draft of the novel I'm editing, "glance" occurs on average once every 1.98 pages. In the second draft, it occurs once every 6 pages....
