Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

Know Your Audience In order to write effectively, you need to know a few key things: what you're writing, where you're writing it, and who you're writing it for. If any one of these elements are missing, there's a good chance you'll miss the mark. For example, if you...

How to Write I'm a big believer in beginning where you are. If you know where you are and where you want to be, you can set forth on a path to reach that goal. Even when you have the same end goal as everyone in the room, your current position - based on past...
YeahWrite #322 Weekend Writing Showcase
The Weekend Writing Showcase is open! TGIF, YeahWriters! Well, it's official. I'm a Washingtonian. It's a strange feeling you get when you realize you're not going back to the home you've known for over thirty years. I'm still not positive it's fully hit me yet. I...

Hello, darlings! This morning a friend challenged us to post a single sentence or paragraph from something we were working on. Trying to do that - to pick out that one perfect sentence among many - is almost the opposite of the old advice to "kill your darlings." It...

Summer reading My summer officially starts next week, with the end of my son's school year. I don't know when I'll manage to write again, but I do know I'll read more during my less structured schedule. I love to read! Speaking of reading, popular voting for the...

When Flash Goes Rogue I've made a rod for my own back. Several weeks ago, I wrote a flash speculative fiction piece that centred around the theme word revenge. In a nutshell, the main character goes all Lorena Bobbitt on her boyfriend, in revenge for a presumed...

We are who we are Think about the most difficult thing you've ever written. What was hard about it? Why was it outside your comfort zone? For me, I tend to have an easier time writing emotional content - feeling hurt, sad, or scared. I can also write impersonal copy...

Crookneck Squash When I'm pressed for time and deadlines loom, I like to procrastinate by reading random things I wrote years ago. While casually wasting time yesterday, I found a charming sentence I concocted involving crookneck squash. I haven't thought about...
YeahWrite #321 Weekend Writing Showcase
The Weekend Writing Showcase is open! Happy Friday, YeahWriters! Assuming my road trip has gone to plan, and my Dad and I haven't ended up in Canada at some point, I should be pulling into my new home of Seattle, Washington sometime today. I'm trying not to panic. I...

When it rains, it pours It's been a bad couple weeks for writing for me; I'm 3/4 of the way through a porch remodel and it's only intermittently sunny in my city, so my days have been divided between frantically trying to work in the sunny hours, frantically trying to...
