Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
YeahWrite #603 Weekly Writing Challenge
It Takes a Writing Village The great thing about writing as a hobby is you can do it anywhere at anytime. Just open up a Word doc or a Notes app or a Trapper Keeper, if you’re old school, and get going. Right? Yeah, no. What are you going to write? Do you have a story...
YeahWrite #602 Weekly Writing Challenge
Doctor, doctor give me the news I haven't told too many people (hahahahaha and here it is for the world to see), but I'm trying to get into a PhD program. Part of that process is writing a thesis proposal. So I've been reading theory and pulling together resources,...
YeahWrite #601 Weekly Writing Challenge
Thank you Last week, when I drafted the template for #600, it didn't quite hit me how monumental that is for YeahWrite. Six. Hundred. Weeks. I tried to nail down exactly when I first discovered YeahWrite, and while I couldn't find the exact week, it definitely started...
YeahWrite #600 Weekly Writing Challenge
Six... hundred? There must be some mistake Traditionally, we've done some kind of event for YeahWrite's milestones. Zoom parties for our birthdays (don't worry, we'll keep doing those) or a special grid (back when we had those) or prompt or badge. But this one kinda...
Registration is OPEN for YeahWrite’s 26th Super Challenge
Jumpstart, kickstart, push start Sometimes writing feels like a smooth machine, well-oiled gears turning and pistons churning to spill words onto the page. Sometimes it... doesn't. And that's when it's time to haul out the jumper cables, stomp on the lever, or roll...
The Scarlet Quill Society: Line Editing and Copyediting
Welcome (back) to the Scarlet Quill Society! This year at YeahWrite our free workshop focuses on everything BUT the writing, with an editorial series that'll take the words right out of your mouth and put them on the page. Of course, we're also including some tips on...
YeahWrite #599 Weekly Writing Challenge
Power of two I got together with my writing partner* this week. It's been a long time since we were able to just sit down and talk about our writing projects face to face. Lots of things have conspired to keep us from focusing on our latest book: there's the pandemic,...
YeahWrite #598 Weekly Writing Challenge
Writing About Writing It makes sense. We’re taught to “write what we know.” We’re told if we don’t develop a daily habit of writing then we’re insufficient. (Who made these rules, and may I give them a piece of my mind?) With that killer combination, OF COURSE...
Congratulations to the Winners of YeahWrite’s Super Challenge #25
The Big Bang We often refer to microprose as the tiniest stories with the biggest bang. But you have to work for the bang. Micros don't have to pack less of a punch than a full-length short story or even a novella, but to get that emotional payload in, every word has...
YeahWrite #597 Weekly Writing Challenge
Peaks and troughs As is often the way in the world of writing, there's been a flurry of my work published all at once. While that's delightful and a huge ego boost, I'm also bracing for the fallow period to come, when it feels like absolutely nobody wants to ever...
