Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!
YeahWrite #325 Weekend Writing Showcase
The Weekend Writing Showcase is open! TGIF, YeahWriters! Man, now I remember why I don't move very often. It's expensive. Your heart breaks when you lose out on an awesome apartment, and manual labor is simply the worst. But sometimes it just has to be...
YeahWrite #325 Weekly Writing Challenge: Popular Vote Winners and Editors’ Picks
Rated C for Courtesy "Okay, but is it R for violence or for sex?" my mom asked, frustrated. She wanted to take us to a movie - I can't remember which one - because it was well over 100 degrees outside (38+ for my Celsius-reading peeps, and it was probably...

YeahWrite #325 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Microprose
What The Good Doctor Ordered It was the season finale of Dr. Who this week, and what a humdinger! There was action, there was pathos, there were monsters, there was a compelling storyline, it was a great package. It was also Steven Moffat's last full series for the...
YeahWrite #325 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Fiction|Poetry
Building up I've been wallowing in a mud hole all weekend. It's the same mud hole I visit whenever a writing competition ends. These contests always make me grow; they show me how far I've come in writing fiction. They also gently remind me how far I've yet to go....
YeahWrite #325 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Personal Essays & Mostly True Stories
Metaphorically Speaking The first post I ever submitted to YeahWrite* - a whopping five years ago - was an essay about crackers. Basically, I went on for a zillion words (no limit back then, and trust me, that was not a good thing) about how I had these crackers that...
YeahWrite #325 Weekly Writing Challenge Kickoff
Every New Beginning Comes from some other beginning's end. (You've probably noticed I often think in song lyrics.) I don't know if I hate endings so much because I'm not a fan of change or the sadness that comes with the finality of things being over. It's probably...
Palinode around
I want do-overs! Whether you call it a mulligan, a retraction, or a palinode, it's human to err and even more human to want to correct that error. This month for our Poetry Slam at YeahWrite we'll explore the palinode - the poet's version of white-out - with a twist....
Emotional Misuse
With the solstice just past, most of us are either in the depths of winter or the height of summer. So it's natural to be thinking about extremes. For this month's Nonfiction Know-How, I'll be discussing emotional extremes and giving you a few tips on when to use and...
YeahWrite #324 Weekend Writing Showcase
The Weekend Writing Showcase is open! TGIF, YeahWriters! So this week has been pretty hectic as I am currently trying to wrap up one job in order to start another (whoop!), as well as find a place to live. Moving is hectic, and it's pretty easy to let yourself drown...
