Weekly Writing Challenges Archive
Welcome to YeahWrite’s archives. Below, you’ll find all of our posts. We kick off each writing week on Friday (what?) with a new prompt for you. For 500 weeks YeahWrite hosted “weekly grids” which enabled writers to link their self-hosted responses, and to read and vote on each others’ work, as well as commenting. Check out our creative nonfiction, fiction|poetry, and microprose archives for a closer look at our nearly ten years of weekly writing competitions. While we no longer host weekly competition grids, we’re still delivering the prompts you love as well as our Super Challenge and classes. We also feature monthly instructional or challenge posts, which you’ll find collected here as well as in our writing help archive!

Taking It Easy (On Yourself) We just wrapped up a busy weekend of the YeahWrite Nonfiction Super Challenge and other writing contests. The adrenaline resulting from having to write an essay or a short story on a tight deadline is addictive, but it can also jangle...

They'll Read Your Story But Not Your Mind I recently wrote about trusting your readers. I said you didn't have to wrap your essay up neatly or bash them over the head explaining how you felt about the thing you just wrote. Here's the part I left out: You do have to...
YeahWrite #327 Weekly Writing Challenge Kickoff
One is the Loneliest Number I've had this whole day to myself to write. I was supposed to get so many things done. But about half way through the day, I lost my steam. Now, that could have been for a number of reasons, but I think it was due in some part to...
Super Challenge #5 Round One is Underway!
Fanfare, please! Fun fact: the word "fanfare" comes from... well, nobody can really seem to pin it down. It shares common phonemes with French fanfarer and fanfaron, as well as Arabic farfar. Overall, it's a sort of onomatopoeia that ends up...
YeahWrite #326 Weekend Writing Showcase
The Weekend Writing Showcase is open! TGIF, YeahWriters! I started a new job this week, and I had totally forgotten the information overload that happens in those first few days, even in a field I've been in for ten years. Needless to say, I am brain dead,...
YeahWrite #326 Weekly Writing Challenge: Popular Vote Winners
cough cough IS THIS THING ON? When I went to Outdoor Ed in whatever grade that was, the counselors had a little song they'd sing in the morning at breakfast to shut all the kids up. The theory was that if we all sang along we'd be quiet for thirty seconds...
YeahWrite #326 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Popular Voting
Quiet Time Suddenly my house seems quiet, with all of my visiting extended family, save one of my nephews, gone as of yesterday. I love having my parents and sisters around but my reading takes a fairly big hit since we tend to spend our time chatting. I missed...

On Constructing Architecture And Stories This week, I'm in Australia's capital city, Canberra. It's my first trip here, and despite having caught the red-eye flight and having had very little sleep, my first impressions are all positive. It's a carefully planned city,...
YeahWrite #326 Weekly Writing Challenge is Open for Personal Essays & Mostly True Stories
Knowing When to Call It Quits When the editors are reading the grids looking for the best of the best, one of the things we often find ourselves saying is, "That essay is great, but I wish it ended two paragraphs earlier." Maybe it's just two sentences, or one, or...
YeahWrite #326 Weekly Writing Challenge Kickoff
I Think I Feel a Lesson Coming On I have some writing hang ups, just like everyone else. A few professional editors have read my manuscript, and they've all said the same thing: the overabundance of thought verbs is really annoying. One particular editor noted that I...
