Time, time time… see what’s become of me.
I have no idea what day it is. KIDDING. It’s Thursday night. Days of the week are kind of getting away from me this week, though, what with quarantine and this project I’m doing. It’s a worthwhile project, but hyperfocus is really REALLY messing with my mind. It’s hard to get to my own writing when I’m like this. Still, the popular vote says I’m doing well enough, I guess?
But it’s not all about the popular vote at YeahWrite, folks. We also have our editorial staff picks to hand out. See, while there’s a popular vote winner every week, we don’t always give out a staff pick. Our editors comb the grids to find, not just the best writing on our grid this week, but what we think is pretty darn great writing anywhere anytime. Picks are based on writing quality, how successful the author is in conveying information, and just plain style.
The other benefit of the editors’ pick, of course, is that unlike the popular vote we’ll tell you why we liked that post. So don’t just skip reading the blurb if it’s not about your post; you’ll pick up some handy pointers about what makes good writing great that you can apply to your own work. For more of that critical feedback, keep an eye on our Roundup for a quick rundown of trends we see each week. We try to highlight the good stuff and point out problems that more than one writer is struggling with. There’s probably a handy tip in there for you right now, so check it out!
But we don’t limit kudos to posts: our commentariat commendation goes to a writer who has gone above and beyond to offer help and community to authors with work on the grids. You can check out our Critic’s Guide for examples of what we mean, but we don’t limit the commentariat commendation to posts with the concrit badge on. There are definitely still ways to help and support authors who don’t feel confident asking for robust criticism, and we trust our community to find them. On weeks when we find a comment to commend, we’ll let you know in the Roundup section.

Rowan’s Roundup: YeahWrite Weekly Writing Challenge #475
There’s a long metacommentary here that I’m not sure I can do, because it’s, you know, late at night. I do, however, want to say that internalizing critique and applying it forward? It pays off. It may not pay off quickly, but it pays off. It teaches you what to look for in your writing before you make the mistake. It shows you interesting places to go, or ways to connect. Listen to your readers. A blog is a gift: treat the feedback like the gift it is. You don’t have to please everyone, but you should notice when your chosen method of communication misses consistently, so that you can adjust that.
Emotions! They’re hard! And yet, when you’re describing emotions the important challenge is to not slip into cliche, or your reader will disengage and maybe even laugh while you’re trying to create a dramatic moment. That means think REALLY hard about how you’re describing your character’s feelings and their expression. Are they the kind of person who expresses themself in understated ways? do they wallow? is their expression consistent with who they are and if not, why not?
