Lucky Seven
I’m drafting what will be the seventh post or page we publish today. That’s our June poetry slam, the new Technique Toolbox (don’t miss this one), registration for our ninth (!!) Super Challenge, the post reminding you that you want to register for our ninth (!!) Super Challenge, and even more excitingly, our new membership benefits and editorial evaluations! But I have the thing you really want to know: who won the popular vote.
Besides the popular vote, we also have the option of handing out an editorial staff pick to any post on our grids. Our editors comb the grids to find, not just the best writing on this grid this week, but what we think is pretty darn great writing anywhere anytime. Picks are based on writing quality, how successful the author is in conveying information, and just plain style. The great part is that we don’t have a finite number of picks to hand out. That means that if two, three, five, or even all the works on one grid are fantastic, we can give them all kudos- and we’d love to, so keep that great work coming!
On weeks when we don’t award a staff pick, keep an extra close eye on the Roundup. That’s our rundown of trends we see from week to week. We try to highlight the good stuff and point out problems that more than one writer is struggling with. There’s probably a handy tip in there for you right now, so check it out!

Rowan’s Roundup: YeahWrite Weekly Writing Challenge #372
Hey, nonfictioneers. Are you ready for a moderated week next week? If you’re worried, take a minute to read back through our “what to look for” suggestions from the voting post; that’s what our editors look for, too! Get ready to bring your best writing – which doesn’t necessarily mean writing about the Most Dramatic Thing That Ever Happened To You, but writing well about a story or topic that you genuinely care about and want your reader to care about too.
Sometimes when I’m reading the fiction entries here at YeahWrite I come across a lot of stories where it seems like the author had a really good idea for a story and told me all about the idea instead of telling the story itself. Could this describe your writing? Lean into your story and observe what’s happening. What does your character want? Why aren’t they getting it, and why should we care if they do? What’s going on around them in the world? Paying attention to these factors will help your readers experience your story instead of just hearing about it thirdhand.
