[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Scarcity, even artifically created scarcity, drives price, as anyone who has ever played Magic: The Gathering can tell you. Fortunately, there are things that are both priceless and free, like tonight’s blue moon or an editorial staff pick here at yeah write. Every week our editors comb through your submissions looking for their favorites. Picks are based on writing quality, how successful the author is in conveying information, and just plain style.
And we don’t give them out every week on every grid. Only when we’re actually impressed. We never want you to wonder, when you see that staff pick, if your writing was really that good, or just better than the rest of that week’s grid. Bring us your best, and we’ll do the same for you! If you got a staff pick this week or any other, grab your badge and wear it with pride.
Once you’re done reading through the staff picks (and congratulating the winners in the comments), keep scrolling down to check out who won the popular vote on all three grids. If you earned the highest number of votes in any challenge, you are this week’s crowd favorite! If you came in first, second or third, you get “top three” honors. Grab your badge from our sidebar!
Looking for your badge? The fiction|poetry, nonfiction and microstories challenges all have the same winner, staff pick, and top three badges. It doesn’t clutter up our sidebar, and they’ll still look pretty on yours![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

no leaving sandra bland behind by outlaw mama
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]”I’m not a doctor, I don’t have any water…” Outlaw Mama lists the reasons she didn’t help other marathon runners, opening the door on a litany of excuses why one person might not help another. It’s easier not to notice. But it’s at the end of the post that she gets down to the heart of the matter: “I’m scared to fuck up.” It takes something to admit that, out here on the Internet. It’s easier not to fuck up. To hide behind excuses. To not take responsibility. To deliberately pop the bubble of privilege that means you don’t have to say the names that rock some of us into our uneasy sleep: Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Jr., Tanisha Anderson, Akai Gurley, Rumain Brisbon, Tony Robinson, Jordan Davis, Sandra Bland, Samuel DuBose. Outlaw Mama’s post isn’t just a call-out, though. It’s a promise, wrapped in a metaphor. We’re all dying in this long race together. Be the doctor. Share your water. Step up.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][vc_single_image alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_circle” border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_self” title=”erica” img_link_large=”” image=”24917″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

how to avoid the killing of darlings by marcy
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Marcy’s use of strong imagery and violent verbs creates a visceral metaphor for the struggle every writer faces: the immediate and personal connection to our words. While it may feel like every phrase is precious, they don’t all necessarily belong in the same body of work, or even the one where you came up with the phrase. Marcy offers us an alternative to the finality of the delete key: if you really love a phrase, find your darling a new home.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”22650″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_circle” border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_self” title=”nate” img_link_large=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_separator color=”grey” align=”align_center”][vc_column_text]
That’s it for our staff picks this week! Remember, we don’t always give out a pick on every grid; if we were impressed by several posts on one grid, we’ll give them all picks, and if nothing really stood out for us on another grid, we’ll hold off.
If you’re lost in the middle of the grid and wondering how you can get a little more feedback on your posts, check out our membership perks!
Everybody: before you go, please take some time to leave your favorites a little love in the comments.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
Weekend moonshine grid opens today at 6 p.m. eastern time
By 6pm it will be 102 degrees Fahrenheit (39 Celsius) where I’m sitting. The coconut oil and ghee in my pantry are well and truly melted. I give up. Ooze, melt, or drip on down with me to the moonshine grid, where the A/C is blasting and all the drinks are daiquiris today. But leave your commercial posts outside, in the car, with the windows rolled up.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]
