[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]I’ll admit, I’m blown away. This might have been the best week ever at the yeah write weekly writing challenge. The quality of writing was absolutely stunning, and we have you to thank for that! If this was your first time here, welcome! We hope you had a good time in our friendly little circles; we really are a great group of writers and readers. There were four virgins in the competition. We are excited about introducing our community to even more writers next week!

As an interesting side note, our yeah write editors aren’t eligible for our editorial staff picks, but they do compete in the challenges as their schedules allow. Thanks to the record seven editors who participated this week![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Yeah write #182 weekly writing challenge editors’ picks: non-fiction

Rehearsing tough by Anastasia at AnaChips

This truly has been an amazing week at yeah write and selecting a single post to spotlight was beyond challenging. However, one in particular wouldn’t stop speaking to me. On the surface, Anastasia wrote about the harsh Winnipeg winter which is surely on its way. But underneath, she’s writing about the changes inside that happen over time. After each shift, she will “acclimatize, re-bundle, and wander out again, smiling at the sun on [her] face even as the wind blows more and more bitterly.” This rings true in not just the bleak winters of Winnipeg, but in so many aspects of life itself. In this short piece, we can feel the “hail-speckled wind” on our cheeks as well as the “kind of permafrost” that changes the spirit when one is faced with a near-constant need for resiliency. This post is beautiful and lyrical and only gets better upon multiple reads.

Yeah write #182 weekly writing challenge editors’ pick: micro-stories challenge

You Can Do It! by Mike Jackson

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”21952″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_circle” border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_self” title=”christine, managing editor”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

Though Mike didn’t come out and quote the mother in his story itself, we know by his actions what she said. Yes, he gave an answer in the title, but I think the piece would stand even without it. It was a great, subtle way to answer the question. Even better, he gave us a story with a beginning, a middle and an end, and left it up to us to decide what that ending really was. Taken literally, mom is a psychotic, twisted creature; taken figuratively, she could be seen as the best kind of moral support. I love that ambiguity. In a more technical sense, I like the way the piece flowed. The sentences are different lengths. Nothing feels choppy or overblown. And the strong last sentence is a thoroughly satisfying denouement.

You Can Do It!

Mum’s been dead three years now but I can still feel her presence. Same as always, pushing me to do things I don’t want to do.
She’s here now, whispering in my ear, cajoling me.
I step off the ledge and fly.
