Welcome to the yeah write weekly challenge Sunday kickoff post!

This is the space in which we share our plans for the week with you. If you’re planning on joining us for the pangalactic gargleblaster, your ultimate question is included in this post. Waiting for Tuesday’s traditional challenge grid or the speakeasy fiction slam to open? Those schedules are also here. Plus, we have summer workshops opening July 14, and you can sign up for one or more today. Yeah write is like the Super Target of the literary blogging world. It’s all here.

The pangalactic gargleblaster opens Monday with the ultimate question: are you on your way to steal my mermaid?

Among the three challenges running at yeah write, the gargleblaster is the newest. It’s also the most exact while simultaneously being the most abstract. You have one ultimate question each Monday to answer in exactly 42 words.

  • Don’t include the question in your answer, but do answer the question
  • Be creative, be original, be imaginative. Death to cliches and overused tropes
  • Be sure your gargleblaster has a beginning, a middle and an end to the story, all within 42 words
  • Don’t reveal to your readers that you’re writing to a prompt; your gargleblaster should stand on its own without prologue, epilogue or other explanation
  • Avoid the markers of amateur writing: shock endings out of nowhere, gratuitous gore, mistaking the presence of dramatics for actual tension and central conflict

Are you on your way to steal my mermaid? Let’s hope so! See you Monday before the gargleblaster grid closes at 42 entries or Monday night at 11:59 p.m. US eastern time.

The US Independence Day holiday week means open submissions with an optional writing prompt for Tuesday’s traditional yeah write challenge grid

The traditional challenge grid at yeah write weekly writing challenge is designed for personal essays and blog anecdotes. Normally, the challenge grid comes with a moderated queue of submissions with Rowan, our submissions editor, releasing entries only if they meet or exceed our submission guidelines.  During the fourth weeks and major US holiday weeks, the challenge grid is open submissions. Your entry will appear immediately on the grid, and you’ll hear from Rowan only if your entry is outside the guidelines. It’s 500 words plus 100 words grace, non-fiction entries with a so what. We’d love to have you this week.

Oh, since it’s a holiday week, the challenge grid comes also with an optional writing prompt. Let’s steal the gargleblaster’s ultimate question: are you on your way to steal my mermaid? For whatever true story that prompts you to tell, the challenge grid opens Tuesday.
