It’s our birthday!

Can you believe it? Yeah write turns 4 years old this week. Go on, say it: we don’t look a day over 3.

Every year we use our birthday as an excuse to shake things up a little bit, and this year is no exception. We’ll be rolling them out over the course of the next couple of weeks. Sit back, grab a slice of birthday cake (over there on the sideboard, I mean, sidebar), and get ready to party.

Here’s our birthday gift to you: we’re increasing the word count limit on the nonfiction and fiction|poetry challenges. That’s right: you get more words! The new upper limit is 1000 words for nonfiction and 750 words for fiction and poetry. That’s a hard limit, folks – no exceptions. And remember: you don’t have to use all the words. Micros, you’re still at 42 words exactly. #sorrynotsorry

Seeing as you came to our little party in the first place, we figure you like us well enough. Want to prove it? We’re coming close to 1000 likes on Facebook, and if you haven’t liked us yet we’d love it if you would. Consider it a birthday spanking. While you’re at it, follow us on Twitter, too.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

Bring us your personal essays and creative nonfiction!

The nonfiction challenge grid opens on Monday at midnight EDT. This is the best place on the ‘net to showcase your best writing. Make us laugh, make us cry, make us think, and above all: make us care.

Is fiction more your thing?

The fiction|poetry grid opens on Tuesday. Bring us your best flash fiction and poetry. If you’re looking for inspiration, grab a mic and join our monthly poetry slam or check out our new focus on fiction! For the poets this month, we’re trying out the dróttkvætt. For you story writers, we’re inviting you to give historical fiction a try. Both are completely optional. A couple of you have already stepped up to the mic: Michael with his space otter dróttkvætt and Shannon with her short story set against the backdrop of the 1992 riots in LA.

This week’s ultimate question: Who’s in charge around here?

Answer this question in exactly 42 words for the gargleblaster micro challenge, or use it (optionally) to inspire your submission to the other competitive grids.

Tips for your microstories

This week’s question requires only two things for a good answer: the person(s) in charge (“nobody” is a valid option) and the place. Please note that the verb tense of the answer should match the verb tense of the question. We’re looking for present tense.

Before you submit

We don’t have a lot of rules, but we do have a few. Please read our submission guidelines for each challenge before submitting your entry.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

Winners’ round-up

In case you missed them, you can find last week’s yeah write staff picks and crowd favorites all laid out for you on Friday’s winners’ post. Leave the winners some love in the comments. They will love you right back, we guarantee it.

The weekend’s not over: the moonshine grid is still open. Have something to add? Old posts and new are welcome. No moderation, no voting. It’s a laid-back relaxed kind of place. Drop by, share your work, and while you’re there, visit your fellow yeah writers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

How yeah write works

We’ve got three competitive challenge grids — nonfiction, fiction|poetry and microstories. They are all moderated. Submissions which do not meet our editorial guidelines will not be passed through to the voting grid. If your submission does not make it through, you will receive detailed personal feedback explaining why.

You can learn more about yeah write in our FAQ.

More than just a weekly writing challenge

Sure, the competitive grids are our bread and butter, but there’s more on the menu. We’re building a community of writers who are continually striving to get better at their craft. The challenge grids are one way to do this. We’ve also got the moonshine weekend writing showcase, which is a great place to let loose and try something new, plus the yeah write coffeehouse — the hippest place on the ‘net to find a writing partner, talk about writing or just hang out with other yeah writers. Head barista Nate serves up a couple shots of espresso every week, specially formulated to get your creative juices flowing. Grab a chair and start chatting up your neighbors!
