Cutting through the static
There is so much noise out there lately: New Year’s resolutions, senseless acts of violence, internet memes, cancer, award shows, GamerGate, helicopter parenting. You name it, somebody’s talking about it and somebody else is arguing. How does a person make sense of it all?
Some of us write. Whether addressing issues directly through a personal essay or topical blog post or entertaining readers — and oneself — with a bit of fiction or a poem, writers process the world through words. We all do it differently, and yet it’s one of the things we have in common. Let’s see what sort of clarity you can give us this week.
Need a pick-me-up?
Let’s face it. That New Year’s resolution you made about cutting down on the caffeine? You’re not going to stick to it. In fact, we’re willing to bet you’ve broken it already. On the other hand, did you make a resolution to write more this year? If so, we can help. The yeah write coffeehouse is serving up shots of espresso and good hearty writing tips just for you! And you won’t want to miss this month’s poetry slam. Step up to the mic; don’t be shy. We’re all learning here.
Ch-ch-changes…
You might have noticed that we changed up the voting schedule. We’re now taking an hour between when the grids close and voting opens to ensure that the editorial staff will have time to review all submissions before voting opens. That means that the voting grids will be open from 11:00 pm Eastern US time on Wednesday until 10:00 pm Eastern time on Thursday. The winners’ post will still go up by noon on Friday.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]
This week’s ultimate question: What do you hear in these sounds?
This week’s ultimate question is brought to you by Dar Williams. Answer this question in exactly 42 words for the gargleblaster micro challenge, or use it to inspire your submission to the other competitive grids.
Tips for your microstories
This week’s question requires three things for a good answer: you, the thing(s) you hear and what meaning you find in the sound(s). Maybe you hear footsteps, and it means someone’s outside your door. Maybe you hear birdsong, and it makes you think of those girls in high school who kept talking behind your back. Be creative, but answer the question.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]
Winners’ round-up
In case you missed them, you can find the yeah write #195 staff picks and crowd favorites all laid out for you on Friday’s winners’ post. Leave the winners some love in the comments. They will love you right back, we guarantee it.
The weekend’s not over: the moonshine grid is still open. Have something to add? Old posts and new are welcome. No moderation, no voting. It’s a laid-back relaxed kind of place. Drop by, share your work, and while you’re there, visit your fellow yeah writers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]
How yeah write works
We’ve got three competitive challenge grids — nonfiction, fiction|poetry and microstories. They are all moderated. Submissions which do not meet our editorial guidelines will not be passed through to the voting grid.
