‘Tis the season
Whether you celebrate a gift-giving holiday around this time of year or not, you can’t deny there’s a certain spirit of generosity hovering in the air. Or maybe it’s just diesel fumes from the snowplows. In any case, the editors are in a giving kind of mood, so we’re handing out free passes to the voting grids for the next two weeks. Yes, that’s right: all three grids will be unmoderated this week and next. You must still meet the basic submission guidelines for word count (600 words or fewer for nonfiction and fiction|poetry, exactly 42 words for microstories), and your microstories must answer the ultimate question. No commercial or sponsored posts, please.
Need a little extra something to motivate you? Pull up a stool in the yeah write coffeehouse — the hippest place on the ‘net to find a writing partner, talk about writing or just hang out with other yeah writers. Head barista Nate serves up a couple shots of espresso every week, specially formulated to get your creative juices flowing. Grab a chair and start chatting up your neighbors![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]
This week’s ultimate question: what’s in the box?
Answer this question in exactly 42 words for the gargleblaster micro challenge, or use it to inspire your submission to the other competitive grids.
Tips for your microstories
This week’s question requires only two things for a good answer: a box, and the thing inside it. The box can be real or metaphorical, but it must be there. As usual, note the tense of the question. We’re not asking what was in the box long ago, what will be in the box when you’re ready to put it under the tree, or what would be in the box if you hadn’t just lost everything. What is in the box?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]
Winners’ round-up
In case you missed them, you can find the yeah write #192 staff picks and crowd favorites all laid out for you on Friday’s winners’ post. Leave the winners some love in the comments. They will love you right back, we guarantee it.
The weekend’s not over: the moonshine grid is still open. Have something to add? Old posts and new are welcome. No moderation, no voting. It’s a laid-back relaxed kind of place. Drop by, share your work, and while you’re there, visit your fellow yeah writers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]
How yeah write works
We’ve got three competitive challenge grids at the yeah write weekly writing challenge — nonfiction, fiction|poetry and microstories. Most weeks, they are all moderated. Submissions which do not meet our editorial guidelines will not be passed through to the voting grid.
For this week and next (yeah write #193 and #194), the three grids are unmoderated!
You’ll find the schedule, submissions guidelines, etc. in our FAQ.

Hello!
The prompt is optional for the nonfiction and fiction/poetry (speakeasy) grids. You can use it as an inspiration if you like, or you can ignore it altogether and just give us what’s in your heart to write that week.
The prompt is mandatory for the gargleblaster microstory challenge. You can write nonfiction, fiction or poetry for the microstory challenge, but you must a) answer the question, and b) use 42 words exactly. This week’s question is: what’s in the box? Answer it as creatively as you can!
If you need a little extra inspiration, why don’t you check out the yeah write coffeehouse? (https://yeahwrite.me/coffeehouse) Nate posts some additional writing prompts and exercises there once a week.
