Flow
Merriam-Webster defines an “essay” as “a short piece of writing that tells a person’s thoughts or opinions about a subject.” Here at yeah write, we view the essay as this and more: it is a story that is mostly true, focused on showing and not telling, told in a way that makes the reader care.
Although the delivery of your essay in our weekly challenge is through your blog, the essay we hope to see isn’t a blog post. It isn’t a journal entry. It isn’t a recipe, a how-to, a recitation of facts, a diary page.
Tell us a story—make it short, make us care. Write about your dog, your garden, last night’s stars, the cashier at Kroger, that wad of gum under your shoe. Chronology, the sequence of when things happen, is less important than what happened. Write outside the lines. Let it flow.
